PREVIEW 2022 CIF-Southern Section Division Finals

DIVISION 2 - GIRLS

TOP GIRLS TO WATCH

Sadie Engelhardt (Ventura) - The freshman has been unstoppable all season long, as she owns the top time in the state for the 800 (2:05.66) while also establishing a new California state record in the 1600 meters at 4:33.29 at the Arcadia Invite. She is bypassing the 3200 meters but we would be remiss not to also highlight that she ran the third-fastest time in state history (9:50.69) several weeks ago on this same track. (pictured above)

Kylee Davis (Golden Valley) - The senior has been sensational all season as she comes in with the top Long Jump performance in the state while also only one of seven girls to clear the 5-6 High Jump bar this season. Davis is the defending divisional champ in both jumps! While also one of the cogs in the state's leading 400 relay squad, she also qualified in the 100 meters this weekend. (pictured below)

Mia Chavez (Chino) - The University of Arizona-bound senior shined with a 2:08.08 from Mt. SAC. Ranked third in California with that performance, she will work to use the brisk early race pace to move on to next week's CIF-SS Masters Meet. Her 4:51.25 for the full mile has her ranked fifth in the Southern Section. She was the 2021 champion in both events but will have the tall task of taking on Engelhardt in 2022.

Maya Shinnick (Glendora) - The senior has steadily progressed all season long and now finds herself as one of the best sprinters in California. Her 24.29 wind-legal performance from Mt. SAC has her fourth in the state while her 55.23 step-up effort from Arcadia is ninth in the state and sixth in the Southern Section.

Mackenzie Browne (JW North) - The junior was runner-up in the 1600 meters a year ago and came through the prelims with a 5:01.10 qualifying effort. In the 800 meters, Browne owns a seasonal best of 2:09.60, which ranks seventh in California and fifth in the Southern Section. She will also shine in the 4x400 relay crew as the Huskies look to defend their title in the event.

Adonijah Currie (Golden Valley) - Although ranked second in California for the 400 meters (53.69), and the division's defending champ, the junior opted to focus on the 200 meters where her 23.65w is the fastest under all conditions in California. She will anchor her top-ranked 400 relay squad (46.03) and is ready to put that sub-54 strength to work in the 4x400 relay.

Jada Gatlin (Mission Viejo) - The defending champion in the Triple Jump, the junior's 40-3 wind-legal performance two weeks ago ranks her second in California. She is ready for another 'big pop' as she is projected to go well into the 40-foot range the next several weeks while she also qualified in the Long Jump.

Laura Brennan (Hart) - The only girl in the division to have gone out past 40-feet in the Shot Put, her 40-8.5 effort places her seventh in the Southern Section.  The junior projects as one of the twelve that will be invited back next week for the Masters Meet.

Emma Hadley (Canyon, Anaheim) - The Colorado-bound senior was a State Meet qualifier as a freshman in 2019 and looking to get back in 2022. Her 4:51.18 seasonal best places her fifth in the Southern Section for the 1600 meters. Meanwhile, her 2:11.45 has her ninth in the section for the 800, the same event she placed second at the 2021 divisional finals.

Lauren Thai (Thousand Oaks) - A finalist in both hurdles and the Long Jump for, then, Agoura in 2021, the senior has now emerged once again as the favorite in both hurdles in 2022. Her 14.58 best from two weeks sees her with the third-best wind-legal mark in the Southern Section while her 44.90 lifetime best from last week moved her up to fifth in the section (of those still competing).

Allura Markow (Dana Hills) - The defending champion in the 3200 meters, she comes in off a lifetime bests from last weekend's prelims in the 1600 (4:54.33) and the 3200 (10:50.88). Looking to defend her title, she projects to advance in both events to next weekend's Masters Meet.

Meagan Humphries (Golden Valley) - Right beside her teammate, Kylee Davis, the sophomore is projected to earn major points in the Long and High Jump. Meanwhile, she also advanced in the 200 meters while she will run a leg on the 4x400 relay. Her 5-6 seasonal best has her tied for second in the Southern Section while she placed third in 2021.

Breija Stredic (JW North) - After a slow start to the season, the junior and defending divisional champion in the event, has come on strong with a 44.81 seasonal best from two weeks ago. She, and Thai, will have a great battle on hand as she is expected to advance to next week. She advanced in the 100 meters as well and will compete in her 4x400 relay.

Georgia McCorkle (Agoura) - Bypassing the 1600 meters to focus solely on the 3200 meters, the UC-Berkeley bound senior steps in with 10:42.15 seasonal best, which places her ninth in the Southern Section.

Morgan Maddox (Culver City) - Fourth as a freshman in 2021 for the 400 meters, Maddox comes in with a 55.94 best as the top sophomore in the section and eighth overall. She advanced back to the final in the 200 meters with a seasonal best of 24.88.

Ta'ahjah Fann (Golden Valley) - Placing sixth in the 2021 final, the junior looks to finish much higher as she steps in with the top wind-legal time (12.01) in the field and looking for the title.  Also competing in the 400 relay, she is ninth in the Southern Section for the 100.

Kennedy Johnson (Glendora) - Looking to improve upon her fourth-place finish from 2021, her top performance came at Arcadia with a wind-legal 39-0.5 measurement. Her performance is the fourth-best in the Southern Section while she also qualified in the 100 meters.

Chelsea Aninyei (Mayfair) - The 2021 Division 3 champion in the High Jump and Triple Jump, the senior comes in fresh off her wind-legal seasonal best of 38-1.5, which moved her up sixth in the Southern Section.  In the High Jump, she is one of only nine girls in the section to clear the 5-5 bar. While placing third in the Long Jump a year ago, she advanced all three events, but in 2022, in Division 2.

Joelle Trepagnier (Culver City) - As the top freshman in the Southern Section, her 56.04 for the 400 meters moved up to ninth in the Southern Section. She also advanced to the final for the 200 meters and owns a seasonal best of 24.86.

Isabella Frisone (Canyon, Anaheim) - The Boise State-bound senior has put together a strong comeback season after fighting injuries the past two years.  Of all still competing in the 3200 meters, her 10:46.38 ranks eighth in the section while she eyes a return trip to the Masters Meet, as she did in 2019 when she was a State Meet qualifier.

D-2 GIRLS TEAM TITLE BATTLE
Of all eight team titles on tap for this weekend, this one is the most secure. Golden Valley settled for the runner-up plaque in 2021 but here in 2022, the group has been on a crusade. A month ago, we had the Grizzlies projected for almost 120 points, but they have backed off in some events.  All the same, we see them having this one wrapped up halfway through the meet and running away with a 50+ point team title landslide!

The plan for Golden Valley is to monopolize points in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, while equally dominating the Long Jump and High Jump, as we have them slated to score between 68-72 points in just those four events alone! Starting off the meet as the top team in California for the 400 relay, they will also push for the win in the 4x400 relay as well. They also have the weapons to score 10-12 additional points in the 300 Hurdles and Triple Jump.

The real battle will be for the runner-up plaque as Thousand Oaks will look to hold off Culver City, Glendora, and Mission Viejo.
