Congratulations to all 2023 girls for their selection onto the MileSplitCA All-State Girls Sophomore Track and Field Team!
Athletes were selected based on rankings within the class as well as statewide rankings regardless of class for marks achieved during the 2021 spring season. Results at section finals and major invitationals were also considered.
Rankings and athlete PRs are based on marks in the MileSplit database. U.S. rankings are within the class of 2023.

SOPHOMORE GIRLS ALL-STATE TEAM

Peyton Bitter (Clovis North/CS) - High Jump
Best in the class of 5-7 to win TRAC Championships. Also won CIF-Central Section Masters title. Had the top clearance at her final seven meets of the season, including Dinuba Relays, Arcadia Invitational, TRAC Championships, and CIF-CS North Area. PR is tied for U.S. No. 12.
MacKenzie Browne (J.W. North/SS) - Mid-Distance
Season bests of 57.54 for 400m, 2:14.43 for 800m, and 4:59.56 for 1600m. She ranks third in the class for 400m/800m combo runners and sixth in the class for 800m/1600m combinations. She ran her 800 PR to win the Ivy League title and her 1600 PR at CIF-SS Division 1 prelims. She came back the next week to place second in 1600 at the division final.
Kapiolani Coleman (Cathedral Catholic/SD) - Hurdles
Won CIF-San Diego Section 300mH titles at both Division 2 Championships (43.24) and Open Championships (44.48). Placed second at the CIF-SDS Open Final in the 100mH in 14.47 (1.2). Also No. 3 in the class with a long jump best of 19-0.50 (1.9). Ranks U.S. No. 18 (100mH, all conditions), No. 7 (300mH), tied for No. 4 (long jump, wind-legal).
Adonijah Currie (Golden Valley/SS) - Sprints
Ranks second in the class among 200/400 sprinters and third in the class among 100m/200m sprinters. Ran season-best 55.64 to win CIF-SS D2 title in the 400. Also has 200m PR of 24.79 (0.5). Foothill League champion for 200m and 400m. Lowered 400 PR to 55.17 at CA State Champs, which ranks U.S. No. 11.
Jada Gatlin (Mission Viejo/SS) - Jumps
Far and away the best horizontal jumper in the class with bests of 39-0.25 (0.5) for the triple jump and 17-4.75 in the long jump for a 56-5 combined total. Won the CIF-SS Division 2 triple jump title. Triple jump PR ranks U.S. No. 8 (ac) and No. 3 (wl).
Sadia Green (Long Beach Wilson/SS) - Sprints
Another top-five combo sprinter in this class with bests of 24.38 (3.0)/24.66 (1.4) and 55.94. Placed fifth in both the 200m and 400m at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Championships. Also a member of the state-best 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams. PR for 400 ranks U.S. No. 20.
Yvette Harris (Stockdale Lincoln/SJ) - Hurdles
Ran 100mH PR of 14.27 (1.5) for third at Arcadia is class best for wind-legal marks. At NorCal Championships, won the 100mH (14.76), placed second in the 200m (PR 25.93) and also went 17-3 in the long jump. Long jump best of 18-0 and 300mH best of 46.59 are both top-11 marks in the class. PR for 100mH ranks U.S. No. 17 (ac), No. 15 (wl).
Avery Hilliard (Poway/SD) - Pole Vault
One of two in this class with clearance of 13-0, a mark equal to U.S. No. 8. She won the varsity division of the Vaulter Magazine Frosh-Soph Championships, and placed sixth in the invitational division at Arcadia, and fourth at CIF-San Diego Section Division 1 Finals.
Grace Hutchison (Buchanan/CS) - Distance
Ranks second in the class to teammate Sydney Sundgren for 1600m/3200m combination runners and fourth in the class for 800m/1600m total. Has bests of 2:16.41 / 4:55.46 / 10:40.83. Ranks U.S. No. 19 for 1600m and No. 17 for 3200m.
Samira Kennedy (Castilleja/CC) - 800
Class leader in the two-lap race with a best of 2:11.51 for second place at CIF-Central Coast Section Finals. Previous best was 2:14.72 for second at the WBAL Championships. Ranks U.S. No. 14 for 800m.
Aujane Luckey (Long Beach Wilson/SS) - Sprints
Ran her 200m best of 24.20 (1.5) for first at the Arcadia Invitational. Also ran 53.94 to win CIF-SS D1 title, a mark that ranks CA No. 1 overall and U.S. No. 4. Member of CA-leading 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams. Ranks U.S. No. 4 for 400m and U.S. No. 11 (ac) for 200m.
Kailah McKenzie (Orange Vista/SS) - Hurdles/Jumps
Versatile athlete from the Inland Empire went 14.25 (2.7) for second place at CIF-SS Division 1 Finals and she popped the state's best long jump of 2021 at 19-8.50 achieved at a league dual meet. Her wind-legal best long jump of 18-11.50 (0.8) won the CIF-SS D1 title. Ranks U.S. No. 14 (ac) for 100mH and U.S. No. 3 (ac) for long jump.
Galadriel Mellion (Weston Rach/SJ) - Throws
In a season cut short by injury, she was nonetheless the best in the class in both the discus (160-11.5/U.S. No. 3) and shot (44-2.50/U.S. No. 5). Her combined throws distance of 205-02 is more than 25 feet farther than No. 2 in the class.
Lily Mulligan (Maria Carillo/NC) - Pole Vault
The other girl in this class with clearance of 13-0, a mark equal to U.S. No. 8. She won pole vault competitions at Eddie Hart, Granada Distance & Sprint, and Redwood Empire Showcase.
Erica Nyberg (Clovis East/CS) - Distance
Among 800m/1600m combination runners in the class of 2023, Nyberg ranks second only to Sydney Sundgren with bests of 2:15.81 / 4:54.20. Ranks U.S. No. 14 for 1600m.
Cate Peters (Monte Vista/NC) - Sprints/Mid-Distance
Doubled up to win the 400m and 800m at the NorCal Championships with PRs of 56.52 / 2:13.49. She is the top 400m/800m combination runner in the class. Showing off her range, she's also the Tri-Valley League Champion in the 100m (12.50), 200m (25.93 PR), and 400m (57.18).
Reign Redmond (Carson/LA) - Sprints
The top 100m/200m sprinter in the class with bests of 11.75 (1.5) to win at Arcadia and 24.66 (1.5) for third at Arcadia. CIF-Los Angeles City Section champion for 100m (11.93/-0.7) and 200m (25.01/0.1). Her 100m PR ranks U.S. No. 10 (ac) and U.S. No. 5 (wl).
Hannah Riggins (Del Norte/SD) - Distance
Among class leaders with 400m-3200m range, ranking fourth for 400m/800m combined times and fifth for 800m/1600m combined times. Bests of 59.09 / 2:13.54 / 4:49.22 / 10:53.14. Also ran 4:59.21 mile for second in the open division race at Arcadia.
Hillary Studdert (Palo Alto/CC) - Mid-Distance
Ranks second in the class for 800m (2:12.84) and fifth in the class for 1600m (4:58.62). She ranks top 5 for 400m/800m combined time and third for 800m/1600m combined time. Ran her PR 800m time for third place at the CIF-Central Coast Section Finals. PR for 800m ranks U.S. No. 16.
Sydney Sundgren (Buchanan/CS) - Distance
The top distance runner in the class and one of the elites in the state. She ran PRs of 4:49.67 for 1600m to win CIF-Central Section North Area, which ranks CA No. 6 overall, U.S. No. 6 in the class. Her 3200m best of 10:25.25 for fifth at the Arcadia Invitational ranks CA No. 7 overall and U.S. No. 7 in the class.
Alyssa Thompson (Harvard Westlake/SS) - Sprints
Soccer star also ranks among the elite 100m/200m combination sprinters in the class with bests of 11.86 (2.5) / 24.71 (1.9). She ran those PR times in winning both sprints at the Mission League Finals, before CIF soccer conflict took off the track. Thompson was named the National Soccer Player of the Year by Gatorade.
Sydnie Vanek (Clovis/CS) - Sprints/Jumps
One of the best long jumpers in the state is also among the best short sprinters in the class. Long jump best of 19-03.50 (0.9) to win CIF-Central Section Masters is class best for wind-legal jumps. Ran 200m PR of 24.80 (1.5) to win at Sanger Metric. Long jump PR ranks U.S. No. 8 (ac) and No. 3 (wl).
