This article highlights the results of second-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events (although the program that processes the meet scores does not have access to individuals in a relay). Teams are limited to three athletes per event. Stay with us for the entire tournament to see which boys and girls teams reign supreme in this virtual meet format.
No. 4 St. Francis (SJ) vs. No. 20 Los Altos (CC)
This ongoing exercise has given us a chance to point out athletes whose early season performances may have otherwise been lost. The process of producing this tournament has allowed us to churn through results and rankings and, in many cases, get an unexpected peek at the future of the sport.
Early season meets can be more of a proving ground for those less experienced than those seasoned vets taking it slow early knowing the grind that normally awaits in May, and for a select few, well into the summer. So shouldn't be a surprise that teams with the top elite stars may no longer be apart of this.
What all this says about our next match is that when you scroll through the list of the girls who scored, notice how few 2020s you see along the way.
You will only see four seniors among the group of girls from fourth-seeded Sacramento St. Francis in its second-round victory over No. 20 Los Altos (CC) in the girls bracket of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.
Seniors scoring for St. Francis: Isabella Palchak, Isabella Fauria, Haley Silva and Aleksandra Utter. Palchak won the high jump and placed second in both hurdles. Fauria had the fastest time in the 800m and was second in the 1600m. Silva was second to Fauria in the 800m and Utter added a third-place point in the pole vault.
That's 24 points from the seniors, the future of the St. Francis team pulled in 51. The number of non-senior girls scoring in this meet for St. Francis: 14!!
Junior Reyna Johnson led that group with wins in the 100m and 100m hurdles. Sophomore Grace Heisinger won the 400m and 300m hurdles. Junior Molly Chambers won the pole vault and picked up third-place points in both hurdles.
Freshman Lauren Soobrian, the CA leader for 3200m (10:39.79, which ranks U.S. No. 7), also had the top time in the 1600m, and freshman Megan MacKenzie had the top distances in both the long and triple jumps.
