This article highlights the results of first-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events. No. 7 LONG BEACH POLY (SS) vs. No. 26 CITRUS VALLEY (SS)
We warned you there would be upsets. March Madness, indeed.
Four girls meets into this process and we've already run across two 20somethings knocking out two top 10 teams. As stated in our primer, only a few weeks of outdoor data will score differently in a big-picture power ranking than in a head-to-head survive-and-advance dual. (We used our power rankings to seed this virtual competition.)
Say hello to No. 26 Citrus Valley, a 72-54 first-round virtual meet winner over the No. 7-seeded Jackrabbits of Long Beach Poly. This result comes immediately on the heels of No. 27 West Hills (SD) eliminating No. 6 Liberty (CS). (It's Upset City, Baby!)
For the Redlands-based Citrus Valley crew, junior Cienna Norman-Thomas and senior Alana Barger earned 16 points by going 1-2 in the 200 and 400 in a surprising 23-0 sweep of the sprints. Citrus Valley also swept the hurdles, 18-0.
Jade McDonald earned 10 points for wins in the long jump and triple jump as the Jackrabbits earned 31 of 34 points in the jumps to keep in competitive. Freshman Maile Quinn won the 1600, among event wins for Poly.
The versatile McDonald, a junior, who in addition to being one of the state's best horizontal jumpers, is also an elite 100m hurdler. However, McDonald does not have hurdle times in the database from the 2020 outdoor season and thus did not score in that event.
Next: Citrus Valley will be matched against the first-round winner between No. 10 Long Beach Wilson (SS) and No. 23 San Pasqual (SD).
