SAN DIEGO -- Over the past 10 years, there have only been six San Diego Section track and field records broken -- one boys and five girls.
This year alone there have already been three records -- two broken and one equaled -- with the possibility of several more heading into the section championships Saturday at Mt. Carmel High.
In the spotlight will be Madison's Kenan Christon, who has lowered the section 200-meter best in three huge successive chunks, La Costa Canyon's Kristin Fahy, who trimmed the year-old section best in the 3200 and Rancho Bernardo's Ashley Callahan, who matched the section pole vault record of 13-6.
But after running a 10.26 100-meter time with an aiding wind of 2.6 mph in the prelims, no one is discounting that given the right conditions, Christon could add that to his shopping cart. After all, the 10.26 came after a pair of false start recalls which usually makes runners a little more cautious at the start.
The section record? None other than the State Meet standard of 10.30 by San Diego Southwest High's Riley Washington in 1992.
Still, it's the 200 where everyone, including Christon, will do one final Limbo dance at home, hoping to lower the bar even more.
First Christon roared to a 20.90 at the Mt. SAC Relays, bumping the 21-year-old section record of 20.97 by 
San Diego Morse's Ike Okenwa to second place. Six days later, in the semi-darkness and downright cold conditions at the Escondido Invitational, he rolled to a 20.67. Then just before thunderstorms forced the evacuation of the stadium in the section prelims, he roared to a U.S. No. 3-equalling wind-legal best of 20.55.
Those expecting to see Christon, who is headed to USC on a football scholarship, celebrate in any way will probably be disappointed. He just does his thing and moves on.
But Christon admits that while he was going for the record at Escondido, he was relaxed and just qualifying on the 20.55.
"I think can run much better," said Christon, pointing out that it is expected to be warmer and dry for the championships. "Actually, I think I might run much better."
Fahy, who broke the year-old section 3200 record of 10:15.97 when she clocked a 10:15.80 at Arcadia, has been training hard while pointing toward the State Meet. In the section prelims she ran 11:06.09, finishing fourth overall.
While no one expects that again Saturday, she might even break a sweat and test her speed while saving as much as she can for Clovis. Runners like Canyon Crest junior Carlie Dorostkar (10:28.14) won't let her qualify too easily.
Then there are the two records that Coronado's Alysah Hickey has been chasing all season.
Hickey took just three long jumps at the section prelims, eclipsing 19-feet on all three, including jumps of 19-10.25 and 19-09 that were well beyond the meet record of 19-06.50 set by Olympic and World Cup star Gail Devers when she was at Sweetwater High in National City in 1983.
The following year Devers won three events and was second in a fourth at the State Championships. Along the way she long jumped 20-07, which has been under assault all season.
Hickey, the defending California champion in the event, has five 20-foot jumps this year, including a wind-aided 20-09 (U.S. No. 3 all-conditions) and a legal 20-02 at the University City Invitational. This time she will get all six of her attempts.
She is also the state leader in the high jump (and tied for U.S. No. 7) at 5-10.50 -- at that same UC Invitational -- and she needs less than an inch more to erase the section record of 5-11 by La Costa Canyon's Whitney Sisler in 2007.
As for Callahan, she is just one of three section vaulters who have already attempted to clear 13-7.
She'll get a big push from Poway's Camryn Thomson (13-3), Katerina Adamiec (13-0) and Mia Cervantes (12-9).
Rancho Bernardo's Jacob Rice (16-4) has been flirting with the boys section record of 16-8 in the pole vault and will have plenty of competition with the likes of La Costa Canyon soph Garrett Brown (16-0) providing the push.
The balance of the boys events will see other state Top 10 athletes like Orange Glen's Moray Steward (100), San Pasqual's Noah Tellez-Velazquez (800), Mission Hills Jonathan Velasco and La Costa Canyon's Caleb Niednagel (3200) and Point Loma's Altan Mitchell (triple jump).
For the girls, look for the likes of La Costa Canyon's Jessica Riedman (800), San Diego's Sonia Redon (100-meter hurdles), the Scripps Ranch 400-meter relay team, San Pasqual's Elise Miller (triple jump) and Santee West Hills' Brandy Atuatasi (shot put) to build momentum into the State Meet.
