Central Coast Section Championship Meet Preview

400 Meter Relay

Girls CCS Meet Record: Mt. Pleasant 46.55 2006
Boys CCS Meet Record: Bellarmine 41.37 2016
Girls At-Large Mark: 47.59
Boys At-Large Mark: 41.85

Valley Christian SJ girls posted the fastest time in the section this season (48.19) at the CCS Semifinals and seem to be peaking at the right time. They will need to hold off the Los Gatos and Menlo Atherton girls to capture the section crown. San Lorenzo Valley girls will be looking for valuable team points by breaking into the top 6.

For the boys, the hottest team that's peaking at the right time is Monterey. They posted the fastest time at their league final and improved that time to CCS #1, 41.99. They will need to hold off Valley Christian SJ (42.28) as well as the surging Serra (42.48) and Carmel boys (42.50).

Girls CCS Meet Record: Anna Maxwell San Lorenzo Valley 4:42.57 2013
Boys CCS Meet Record: Mark Stillman Willow Glen 4:08.7 1977
Girls At-Large Mark: 4:52.84
Boys At-Large Mark: 4:14.50

With Menlo in the team title hunt, junior Kyra Pretre (John Hale photo) will be participating in 1600, 800 and running a leg on the 1600m relay. She won the WBAL championship in this event and won her heat easily last Saturday. She will be the favorite going into the final over Scotts Valley senior Jessica Kain. The majority of the rest of the field all seem to be in the hunt and we could have a photo finish to determine the last state meet qualifying spot.

Garrett MacQuiddy posted the fastest time in at the semifinals but may have scratched from this event to focus on the 800. If that is the case, the favorite will be Bellarmine sophomore Colin Peattie. He rolled to a PR of 4:15.51 and the only drama may be if he can run fast enough to post the fastest all-time sophomore mark for a CCS athlete. His main competition should come from the three St. Francis runners in the final, Juan Pablo Garcia, Eric Eng and Daniel Skahill.

100/110 Meter Hurdles

Girls CCS Meet Record: Vashti Thomas Mt. Pleasant 13.52 2008
Boys CCS Meet Record: Arend Watkins Silver Creek 13.84c 1997
Girls At-Large Mark: 14.24
Boys At-Large Mark: 14.30

Jazlynn Shearer has been the best hurdler in the section for the past four years. She will be after her 4th section title as she heads to the state meet in the pursuit of a state title. The only drama will be if she can surpass the section record that was set by Vashti Thomas of Mt. Pleasant. Behind her should be a terrific battle for the last two state meet spots between Meagan Kiefer of Branham, Jessica Swalve of Westmont, Thea Mollerstedt of Los Altos and Alexandra Chan of Menlo.

The overwhelming favorite in this event is Los Gatos senior Masaki Wada Law (video below from CCS Top 8 meet). He easily won last years final and will be looking to dip under 14 seconds for the first time in his hurdling career. After him, it will be a dog fight to determine the state meet qualifiers as the next 7 hurdlers could potentially be in the mix for a top 3 spot. Leigh's Diego Rodriguez and San Benito's Dillon Engler are the two other hurdles that may have the edge with both of them dipping under the 15-second mark this season.

400 Meters
Girls CCS Meet Record: Leslie Maxie Mills 53.92 1982
Boys CCS Meet Record: Bill Green Cubberley 45.51 1979
Girls At-Large Mark: 55.62
Boys At-Large Mark: 48.53

The favorite to win this event will be San Lorenzo Valley senior Camryn Crouch. She recorded the fastest time run by a CCS athlete in the semis (56.66) and has been impressive all season anchoring the 1600m relay for her team. Menlo junior Charlotte Tomkinson has a puncher's chance for the title and could chase down Crouch using her distance strength. Los Altos junior Anna Zaeske will try to keep the top two runners close as she will be scoring valuable team points for her team.

Los Gatos senior Joey Monti was the leading 400m runner in the section throughout the season but there is a new leader in the clubhouse. Santa Teresa junior Oboh Omodiaogbe absolutely blasted the semifinals with a new PR and section best time of 47.60. We should be in for a terrific final with Omodiaogbe leading coming off the turn chased by the fast-closing Monti. Serra's Aidan Mendoza ran the 3rd fastest time in the section this year in the semis (49.22) and will need a similar if not faster time to hold off the field.

100 Meters
Girls CCS Meet Record: Jeneba Tarmoh Mt. Pleasant 11.39 2006
Boys CCS Meet Record: Rubin Williams Valley Christian SJ 10.37 2002
Girls At-Large Mark: 11.94
Boys At-Large Mark: 10.72

It's not often that an athlete wins 4 events at a section final. Silver Creek senior Jazlynn Shearer has that opportunity this season and this may be the event that decides if she can actually accomplish that feat. She had the fastest time in the semifinals and will be the favorite going into the race. She will need to hold off defending section champion, Jessica Eagle of Menlo Atherton as well as the Soquel sophomore duo of Renee Parker and Sarah Canavan.

The 100m should still have a very competitive final following the elimination of several of the top sprinters in the section at the semifinals. Monterey junior Azjani McGill posted the fastest time in the section and appears to be the strongest sprinter at this point. Evergreen Valley junior Kurtis Lee has the fastest time this season at 10.69 and will more than keep McGill honest. Los Gatos hurdler Masaki Wada-Law is in this race to score valuable team points and seems to be on a roll after posting his PR at the SCVAL finals at 10.84.

800 Meters
Girls CCS Meet Record: Alicia Follmar Saratoga 2:07.79 2005
Boys CCS Meet Record: Rick Brown Los Altos 1:50.7 1970
Girls At-Large Mark: 2:11.85
Boys At-Large Mark: 1:54.54

The defending section champion in this event is Menlo junior Charlotte Tomkinson. She has continued to impress this season and has posted an undefeated record vs California opponents. She is scheduled to contest the 400 as well which might make her pursuit of a 2nd section title more exciting. Teammate Kyra Pretre has finished in 4th place the past two seasons and will be looking for a top 3 finish here. St. Francis sophomore Isabelle Cairns seems locked into a top 3 finish and will be looking to upset the Menlo duo.

We could be in for quite a finish in this race as two great kickers will be looking to chase down their first section title in this event. St. Francis junior Euan Cairns likes to chase down the field and will be in the hunt here. Westmont junior, Garrett MacQuiddy (photo above courtesy of John Hale), has been super impressive this spring in multiple distance races and could be ready to post a huge personal best. Other notable runners in the field with strong kicks include Gunn's Justin Chiao, Scotts Valley's Darren Mudge and impressive El Camino freshman, Yutaka Roberts.

300 Meter Hurdles
Girls CCS Meet Record: Tisha Ponder Del Mar 41.71 1996
Boys CCS Meet Record: John Montgomery Independence 36.60 1988
Girls At-Large Mark: 43.63
Boys At-Large Mark: 38.30

The Monti family will be quite busy at the section final. Younger sister Abby Monti will be favored to win this race and has the fastest time in the section this season at 44.44. She recorded that time at the semifinals and may be part of a double victory in this event with brother Joey favored to win the boy's race. It appears that dipping under the 46-second mark should secure a state meet spot and if that is the case, Cupertino senior Maxine Schultz, Los Altos senior Thea Mollerstedt, Gunn senior Ria Sood and Soquel's Renee Parker should all be in the mix for a top 3 finish.

Los Gatos will be a strong favorite to nab the team title behind it's two impressive hurdles, Joey Monti and Masaki Wada-Law. They will be after 18 points here and could wrap up the team title with top 2 finish. Leigh's Diego Rodriguez has the 3rd fastest time in the section at 38.95. He will need to duplicate that time to hold off San Benito's Dillon Engler and Fremont's Idreece Barnes.

200 Meters
Girls CCS Meet Record: Jeneba Tarmoh Mt. Pleasant 23.47 2006
Boys CCS Meet Record: Robin Williams Valley Christian SJ 20.84 2002
Girls At-Large Mark: 24.26
Boys At-Large Mark: 21.81

Every section final is an opportunity for an athlete to rise above the field and wow the crowd with multiple excellent performances. This year's section final may be San Lorenzo Valley's Camryn Crouch's time to shine as she could potentially win 3 events. She will be a slight favorite here but the race might come down to a photo finish with Menlo Atherton's Jessica Eagle and Westmont's Jessica Swalve.

We should have an excellent match-up here between 100m specialist Azjani McGill of Monterey and 400m specialist, Santa Teresa's Oboh Omodiaogbe. They could be chasing their 2nd section title here as they will both be doubling back from their first event. The King's Academy's Kamau Carlisle has recorded one of the fastest times in this event in this section and will definitely be in the hunt for a state meet spot here.

3200 Meters
Girls CCS Meet Record: Cory Shubert Del Mar 10:09.5 1983
Boys CCS Meet Record: Gordon MacMitchell Gunn 8:58.60c 1973
Girls At-Large Mark: 10:28.90
Boys At-Large Mark: 9:07.48

The strong favorite to win this event is Carlmont junior, Kaimei Gescuk. She has the fastest section time in this event at 10:32.95 from the Arcadia Invitational. She is focusing her efforts in this event even though she owns the 2nd fastest time in the section in the 1600m. Her main competition should come from Presentation junior, Gianna Mendoza. She also recorded her fastest time at Arcadia with a time of 10:44.09. Those two runners should break open the race early and battle head to head for the win. Santa Cruz runner Lila Roake will be looking to secure the last state meet qualifying spot and will need to stay in front of Castilleja junior Tevah Gevelber and Los Altos senior, Naomi Donovan.

Last year's CCS final in this event was quite competitive with 6 athletes dipping under 9:20 and Bellarmine senior Meika Beaudoin-Rousseau finishing in 4th place with a time of 9:10.19 and not qualifying to the state meet. This year's final should not be as fast but we should still get an excellent race. The defending champion and fastest CCS competitor this season, Los Altos senior Owen MacKenzie, will unfortunately not be here to defend his crown due to injury. The 2nd fastest 3200m runner, Henry Saul of Palo Alto, will come into this event as the slight favorite. He podiumed at state in Cross Country and will be participating in his 3rd section final in this event. Bellarmine sophomore Colin Peattie has been impressive of late and will definitely be a factor in this event. Just like Peattie, St. Francis teammates Eric Eng and Juan Pablo Garcia will all be doubling back from the 1600m but will all be in contention for the state meet.

4 x 400 Meter Relay
Girls CCS Meet Record: Mt. Pleasant 3:49.9 2005
Boys CCS Meet Record: Los Altos 3:15.8 1970
Girls At-Large Mark: 3:50.90
Boys At-Large Mark: 3:18.73

This event could determine the team title as the top 3 teams in this event will all be in contention for the team title. The fastest CCS team this year is the San Lorenzo Valley girls (Lucjan Szewczyk/Santa Cruz Sentinel photo) who ran 3:57.80 at the Arcadia Invitational. They will have talented senior Camryn Crouch anchoring which means they just have to be close to the lead to have a shot. The Menlo girls have also dipped under the 4 minute mark this year and will have their own superb anchor in Charlotte Tomkinson. Los Altos ran their fastest time of 3:59.19 at their league final and will have Anna Zaeske anchoring their team.

The final event of the evening should come down to the following 3 teams. Santa Teresa recorded the fastest time at the semifinals and will have the best 400m runner in the section anchoring their team. Los Gatos ran 3:20.42 at the CCS Top 8 meet and will be looking to stamp their team victory with a win here. The Serra boys have done quite well in this event and seem to be peaking at the right time by posting their fastest time of the season last week. Those three teams should be clear of the field and we could have a wildly exciting last 100m to wrap up the 2019 CCS final.
