Lowell's Ewe, Rodriquez Get Top San Francisco Section Honors

OVERVIEW

In the 16-school San Francisco Section, the smallest of California's 10 Interscholastic Federation sections, Lowell is the gold standard in track & field.

Lowell won the varsity boys team title for the fourth year in a row and 19th time in 22 years, and the varsity girls team title for the seventh year in a row and 31st time in 32 years. Lowell has won the varsity girls team title 39 times since 1978.

Individuals of note included:

Senior Natalie Ewe (Lowell) and junior Noah Battaglia (Lowell), who both competed in the 3200 finals at the CIF-State Championships June 1-2 at Clovis Buchanan High. Ewe, a three-event champion in the San Francisco All-City Finals, also competed in the 1600 prelims at State. 

Senior Emile Rodriguez (Lowell) was the top placer among a dozen or so section qualifiers at the State Final. Rodriguez was 17th in the 800 with an PR 1:55.95.

Junior Jelani Al-Malik (Mission), who qualified in both the 100m and 200m for the State Prelims, was 20th in the 200 (22.56). Al-Malik won both sprints at the City Finals.

Also earning a top-20 place at State Prelims was Lincoln senior Kuiwini Manumua, who threw 133-05 in the girls discus. She was the section's top thrower, with a best of 39-10 in the shot and 138-5 in the discus.

Senior Lena O'Grady (Lowell) won the City title in the 200m and in the 400m, each for the third consecutive year, and ran at the State Meet in both. It was her third trip to State in the quarter.

Lincoln junior Isabel Miner won her second consecutive City title in the 100 hurdles and competed in the State Meet Prelims for the second year in a row. She posted the section's top marks in the 100 hurdles (10.71), 300 hurdles (49.8) and high jump (5-0).
