Step 1: Concentrate On Your Race Plan And Yours Alone

Lane knew from the opening gun that she needed to take off relative to her own plan.

Just a day earlier, she scouted the course along with Larsen, and identified four key sections: Valley Loop, Switchbacks, Poop Out Hill, and Reservoir Hill. 

Aside from all of those markers, Lane couldn't look past the start. She had to set the pace -- specifically, her pace -- at the start of the Division 1/Division 2 Individual Sweepstakes race from the opening stretch on the airstrip. 

And as she made her way to rolled gravel, Lane was already en route to establishing her own tempo.
