One of the interesting things about handicapping the state meet is comparing season bests to the marks produced in section finals. The championship season is a grind, and often athletes and teams just try to survive and advance. As a result, they often don't hit PR's in the very meets that determine seeding at the state meet. That means the state meet performance list can be very different from the season rankings.
That's why virtual meets can be so useful: they take the athletes in the meet and rank them by season bests rather than seed mark, then score the meet accordingly. Of course, a few athletes could be waiting for the state meet to unleash the full fury of their ability...
