Sizzler 49er Canyon Run-Working up a sweat on Labor Day

Area runners get out early and hit the streets and trails at the 28th annual 49er Canyon 10-mile run

Auburn, CA - Sixty-one runners & Walkers got outdoors before their barbecues started on Labor Day and took part in the 28th annual Sizzler 49er Canyon Classic 10-mile run and 1.5 Mile Community Fun Walk.

Athletes took part in 17 individual divisions and four team divisions on a challenging course that included 3.9 miles of paved roads, 4.5 miles on the Western States Trail and another 1.6 miles of paved road.

"We had a beautiful, cool day, and all went like clockwork," said race director Nick Vogt, Executive Minister of Christian Team Ministries.

Austin Violette (pictured right), a junior at Forest Lake Christian High School, was the individual winner in the 10-Mile Run with a solid time of 1hour, 8 minutes, 32 seconds, nearly 7 minutes ahead of veteran runner Mike Buzbee, cross country coach of Yuba City High School, who clocked 1:15:13 to win the Master’s age 40-49 division.
 
Amber Kinaston of Penn Valley, was the top Women’s finisher in the 10-Mile Run, finishing 3rd place overall, in a very respectable time of 1:16:17 In the team divisions, the Co-Ed duo of Logan Thomsen and Eva Stuart, from Santa Rosa, took first with a time of 1:16:18. The team portion the race was broken up into 5.8-mile and 4.2-mile chunks with one runner for each portion.

In the girls high school team race, Christa Weisman and Sammie Guthrie took first in 1:28:58, while Madeline Zea and Ashley Blair took second in 1:51:35; both teams were from Forest Lake Christian High School.  Josh Long and David Herron, also from Forest Lake Christian, took first in the boys High School team race.
 
Jon and Jessica Webb of Applegate, won the Family-Team division in 1:52:34
 
"I thought all of the local runners ran extremely well," Vogt said. "And the high school cross country runners from Forest Lake Christian made a very strong showing today."
 
Legendary ultra-runner, Darryl Beardall of Santa Rosa was the men's 70-and-over champ with a time of 1:43.28 and Lynn Hurrell of Grass Valley was the women's 70-plus winner with a time of 1:47:52.
