How To Use MileSplit Individual & Team Rankings

Want to know who the top sophomore girl in Division 2 of the North Coast Section is? (It's Gillian Wagner of Redwood, by the way.)  How about the top JV team in the Horizon League of the Southern Section? We've got you covered.

As part of our #OpenRankings days this week, we've prepared two brief tutorials to introduce you to some of the features and tools that Insiders can access any time.  We have separate individual and team rankings menus that allow you to develop customized statistical reports (and we also have a tool that provides both rankings, but that's a subject for tomorrow).  Here's a quick look at just a few of the things you can do with our database:

Start Here: Nav Bar

From any MileSplit page, you can access the rankings in the navigation bar heading.  Mouse over the Rankings tab, and you'll see links to the starting menu for each of our fundamental rankings types.  There are three individual rankings, one for each season, all referred to as "lists."  They always go to the most recent season with results - so right now that would be 2015 for all three seasons.  The team rankings are found under the heading XC Team Scores, although they CAN be used in other seasons, too.

Individual Rankings

Once you're on the individual rankings menu, you have several options to choose from to help you drill down into the rankings.  In particular, you can adjust the Grade dropdown to filter the rankings to only one class year, or you can isolate a particular section, division or league with the League dropdown.  The leaderboard will automatically adjust as you change the settings, and then you can choose a particular event or distance.  You can also change years to access results from the past - and every year we add more historical rankings to our database.  Finally, Insiders can access the rankings from ANY state, as well as overall national lists.

Team Rankings

If you want to see how a given set of teams stack up against each other, use the XC Team Scores menu.  In much the same way as the individual rankings, you can customize the team rankings by changing the division/section/league, the race distance, or the number of scorers per team.  You can even compare teams using various JV configurations, which instruct the database to skip over the top runners on the team.  The scoring is determined just like a cross country meet, except there will be no individuals that aren't on the included teams (if you want both individuals AND teams in the same report, we have something for you tomorrow!).
