We took a different approach this week for our first look at the true state-meet contenders in terms of team scoring: what would it look like if we held an invitational with just the top handful of teams from every section in the state?
In other words, instead of ranking all the top performances and then determining the top-scoreing teams from that, we instead decided to focus on identifying the best teams in each section separately. We used section prelims results (and finals where they have been held) and season bests in section-by-section virtual meets, plus our exclusive Power Ratings function, to find the top squads from all around the state. Then, we brought them together into a Virtual Super Meet, scoring
Because we started with teams rather than all individual performances, a few of the state's best individuals have been left out (they aren't on teams that rank high enough to make this virtual). For example, Alyssa Brewer and Faimalie Sale are both on track to win an event at the state meet, but their teams don't generate enough additional points to make them team contenders. This definitely isn't the only way to slice this data - and next week we will have a clearer picture by using only section finals results - but we hope you find it interesting!
