D3 Boys Team Rankings
When we ran the MileSplit database rankings for 5,000 meters, the State meet distance, West Torrance emerges as the top team in the division. But, because of the limited number of 5K races during the regular cross country season, a filter for three miles likely gives us a more accurate projection of what to expect at the Nov. 25 CIF championship meet.
The three-mile filter brings up Palos Verdes, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section, as No. 1, and Maria Carrillo of the North Coast Section as No. 2 ahead of West Torrance.
West Torrance, the second-ranked team in the Southern Section, was second at the 2016 State Championship but three of its five scorers at Woodward Park were seniors. Andrew Hazzard (19th among team scorers) and Ike Tamanaha (29th) are the two scoring returners.
Senior Rory Abberton, ranking second on the team at both distances, was the team's No. 7 runner at State last November, placing 53rd among team scorers. Senior Caleb Terrill, fifth at the State Division 2 final as a sophomore, is the top-ranked runner at both distances for West Torrance. He missed most of 2016 with injuries. Terrill is the state's No. 3-ranked D3 runner at 5K.
