San Diego Section Championships Mostly Hold to Form

There are very few surprises in cross country and two of the state's top runners -- La Costa Canyon's Kristin Fahy and Cathedral Catholic's Joaquin Martinez de Pinillos -- made sure there weren't any in their races as they sped to victory in the San Diego Section championships.

Since the Morley Field course was changed this season-taking out the second hill for the boys and lengthening it for the girls so each ran 2.96 miles -- the two standouts easily set course records in preparation for next Saturday's state championships in Fresno.

Fahy pulled away from teammates McKenna Brown and Jessica Riedman to post the fastest time of the day, 17:10.7, to capture the Division 2 title. Martinez de Pinillos, who missed almost all of the 2017 track season with an injury, showed he's ready to roll after clocking a winning time of 15:03.5.

Here is a breakdown by division.
