Malibu sophomore cross country runner Claudia Lane entered the 2016 season unheralded but quickly made her presence felt by winning the Seaside Invitational. She finished 2nd to eventual NXN champion Brie Oakley at the Woodbridge Invitational. That turned out to be her only defeat of the season that included victories at Palos Verdes, Mt. SAC, and the CA state meet Division IV race. Lane also won the Foot Locker west region race and recorded her most impressive victory a week later at Balboa Park by winning the national Foot Locker Meet. She defeated 2nd place finisher, future Stanford Cardinal the North Carolina runner of the year Nevada Mareno.
With her spectacular cross country season, Gatorade announced Claudia Lane as the California Runner of the Year. She will be up for the national runner of the year which will be announced in the next month. The boys runner of the year will be announced this Saturday.
