CA Highlights from USATF Junior Nationals

An annual rite of summer track passage, the USATF Junior Olympics are being held this week in Jacksonville, Florida. Numerous California teams crossed the country to participate, and the results were very strong for our state from the beginning on Monday. We'll keep this page updated daily so you can follow the exploits of the current and future stars of the Golden State!

Day 6 Highlights:

  • Kevin Wilkinson (Pacific Coast Shockwaves) finished 5th in the 15-16 Boys 800 by running 1:58.08.
  • Erick Steward (Pacific Coast Shockwaves) won the NATIONAL TITLE in the 13-14 Boys 800, posting a time of 1:59.84.
  • Isabella Fauria (Oak Hill Racing) earned silver in the 13-14 Girls 3000 with her time of 10:08.41. Annika Paylor (Los Gatos TC) finished 4th in the same event. Preston Norris (Mount Diablo Heat) took 2nd place in the 13-14 Boys 3000 by running 9:26.76.
  • Lelicia Booker (Millenium Express TC) finished 5th in the 13-14 Girls Discus Throw with a mark of 106' 11".
  • Shawn Poma (Millenium Express TC) claimed 4th place in the 13-14 Boys Shot Put by throwing 51' 9.75".
  • Blake Shepherd (Pacific Coast Shockwaves) finished 6th in the 13-14 Boys 200.
  • The Pacific Coast Shockwaves were back at it again - this time it was sisters Daniela & Natalia Quintero taking gold and silver in the 11-12 Girls 3000, running 10:14.39 and 10:27.11, respectively. The team also had Alex Mainvielle claiming the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP in the 11-12 Boys 3000 with his time of 9:48.85.
  • Quentin Mayo (VeloCity Track Club) earned 4th place in the 11-12 Boys Long Jump with a mark of 16' 10.75".


Day 5 Highlights:

  • Erica Grotegeer (Wheatland Union/Revolution Express) earned a silver medal in the 15-16 Girls Discus, throwing 140' 6".
  • Robert Miranda (Menlo School/Menlo Greyhounds) took 3rd place in the 15-16 3000 with his time of 9:11.54.
  • Charles Lenford (Oceanside) ended up in 4th place in the 17-18 Men Discus Throw with a mark of 181' 0".
  • Charlotte Maher (Millenium Express TC) threw 127' 3" to finish 2nd in the 13-14 Girls Javelin Throw.
  • April Fontenette (Valley United TC) finished 2nd in the 9-10 Girls Shot Put with a mark of 29' 7.25". Kori Martin (Pasadena Running Roses) took 3rd in the same event, throwing 27' 8.25".


Day 4 Highlights:

  • Madison Holt (Elk Grove/Golden State Throwers) took 2nd place in the 15-16 Girls Hammer Throw with her mark of 137' 0" CA #3.
  • Alexander Bowers (Valley United TC) finished 4th in the 9-10 Boys High Jump.
  • Connor Luck (Millenium Express TC) placed 5th in the 13-14 Boys High Jump.


Day 3 Highlights:

  • Emelda Malm-Annan (Monterey Trail/Golden State Throwers) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION in the 17-18 Women's Hammer Throw, and her best mark of 182' 2" is CA #1 and US #4. In the 17-18 Men's Hammer, her club teammates Michael Root and Cody Holt finished 3rd & 5th, respectively.

  • The Pacific Coast Shockwaves are the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS in both the 11-12 Girls & Boys 4x800, clocking 9:43.14 and 9:22.89, respectively. Their "B" team finished third in the boys' race! The Shockwaves also finished 2nd in the 13-14 Girls 4x8 and 6th in the 13-14 Boys 4x8.
  • McFarland Track Club earned a NATIONAL TITLE in the 13-14 Girls 4x800 with their time of 9:37.41, edging out the Shockwaves for a 1-2 CA sweep. Los Gatos Track Club finished 5th in the same race.
  • Maya Rush (Pacific Coast Shockwaves) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION in the 11-12 Girls Javelin Throw, having posted a mark of 124' 3".
  • Colin Tanismore (Mission Valley TC) is the NATIONAL CHAMPION in the 13-14 Boys Triple Jump, with his wind-aided 42' 0" mark in the 5th round.
  • Imani Speed City Track Club earned 2nd place in the 13-14 Boys 4x800, running 8:51.09. Umoja Track Club was 3rd in that race, as well.
  • Victoria Davis (Valley United Striders) finished 4th in the 9-10 Girls High Jump.
  • Adam Laycock (Plyometric Fusion TC) took home 3rd place in the 9-10 Boys Shot Put with a mark of 33' 5.25".


Day 1 & 2 Highlights:

  • Rithika Vatturi (Mission Valley TC) finished 3rd in the 13-14 Girls 3000 Racewalk, clocking 16:36.13. Teammate Rahul Kumar took 4th in the 17-18 Men's race with a time of 21:52.14.
  • Lawann Patterson (East Palo Alto Greyhounds) finished 6th in the 9-10 Girls 1500 Racewalk with a time of 10:27.51. Teammate Salvador Espinoza earned 4th place in the 11-12 Boys race, posting a mark of 10:24.15.
  • Kierra Facer of the Temecula Rangers placed 3rd in the 15-16 Girls 3000 Racewalk with her time of 17:16.82.
