MileSplitCA visited with some of the returning CIF-State Track and Field champions for the purpose of filming a regular practice to produce a series of videos we are calling 'Workout of a State Champion'. This is boys shot put champion Daniel Viveros, a senior at Liberty HS in Bakersfield.
Viveros won the CIF-State title with a shot put best of 62-5.50, despite competing with an ankle injury. He also made the finals in the discus throw.
Viveros, who has signed to throw at the University of Mississippi (aka Ole Miss), has a PR in the shot put of 63-10.50 and in the discus throw of 184-2. He is the U.S. No. 4 returner in the shot put and CA No. 4 returner in the discus throw.
Viveros won the CIF-Central Section title in both throws as a junior in 2018. He has won the CIF-CS South Area title in the shot put all three years and in the discus each of the last two years. He is the defending shot put champion at the Arcadia Invitational.
Since exceeding 60-feet in a meet for the first time May 20, 2017, Viveros has had 16 meets with throws of 60 feet or beyond. He was 18-0 in shot put competition last season, including two winter track wins, and has 34 shot put wins while at Liberty.
Viveros's usual practice routine is to alternate days working on shot put and discus throw but on the day MileSplitCA visited, he did an abbreviated version of both. In this video, you will see Viveros working both the discus and the shot, plus clips showing him during his post-practice weight room session. We hear from Viveros as well as his shot put coach, Rod Chronister, who explains how Daniel is employing a new technique to his shot put this season.
