SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The Midlothian boys cross country team, the returning Group AAA State Champions and ranked 25th in the nation, started off their season in winning style as they won their section at the first ever Great Race of the Great Bay races held at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park 5K course. The Midlothian boys won the varsity boys section 3 as they placed 5 runners in the top 23 for a team score of 79 points. Leading the charge was senior Anthony D'Amato who placed 6th in the race with a time of 16:22. Scoring next for Midlothian was fast improving sophomore Ryan Witt who finished 13th with a time of 16:42. By far the biggest strengths of Midlothian is there amazing depth of talent and their ability to pack it up was very evident in this race. Jason Call (17th, 16:54), Joseph Johnson (20th, 17:04), and Taylor Matthews (23rd, 17:06) rounded out an impressive top 5 that excluded 9:57 3200 meter runner Michael D'Amato who ran sixth for the team with his time of 17:17. Combining the three sections of varsity races, Midlothian finished 5th with 232 points.
Finishing 20th overall and 7th in the 2nd section was the Lake Braddock boys who were led by sophomore Steven Hoogland, who was coming off a third place finish at the Monroe Parker Invitational. Hoogland finished 13th in his section with a noteworthy time of 16:38.
The Lake Braddock girls also took 7th in their section as they competed without their #1 runner Kelly Swain.
Something with the 7's as the Midlothian girls finished 7th in the 2nd section of the girls varsity races. Junior Amanda Creamer paced the squad with her 24th place finish with a time of 20:39.
