Edwardsville Star Signs With Stanford

Edwardsville standout Garrett Sweatt decided to go past National Signing Day to ensure his college decision was the right one. After much consideration  Sweatt chose to take his talents out west to Palo Alto, California and run for Stanford University. says the recruiting process has been amazing and the opportunity to talk to coaches from all over the country gave him an insight as to what college running would be like.

"It came down to University of Illinois and Oklahoma as well. Stanford was just an amazing campus. I loved the atmosphere when I visited and I feel that I can fit in well with the team. It has one of the best athletic/academic combinations in the entire country and in the end  I decided that is where I could see myself having the most success both in my studies and in my running. "

Sweatt, who has numerous all-state credentials becomes a member of a Cardinal distance program that is one of the tops nationally year in and year out.  He plans on helping Stanford maintain that success as an incoming freshman looking to make an impact.

"I want to help them maintain that success and also help push it to the next level. I want to make myself the best athlete I can be and hopefully become an All-Americans. Fans can expect to see a runner who puts it on the line every race. I know I'm more strength oriented so making the pace hurt is my strong point."

Now that recruiting is behind him, the Edwardsville star has his eyes set on his senior track season.

"Currently I am focused on my track season 100 percent. My track goals are to break nine minutes in the 3200 and run 4:10 in the 1600. I also want to score as many points as possible at the state meet to help my team capture a trophy."
