Team Spotlight: Clovis North, Will They Podium In November?
By Edgar Salazar | MileSplit California
Will the girls from Clovis North stand on the podium in November? It's not a matter of if they can; it's a matter of if they will.
The girls from Clovis North have emerged as a team to watch as the California cross country season progresses, with the Broncos showing the depth and consistency necessary to contend for a podium finish at this year's CIF State Cross Country Championships. Their early-season performance at the Fleet Feet Summer Sizzle at Woodward Park offered a glimpse of that potential, as Clovis North finished second with 41 points and placed four runners amongst the first eleven finishers and their entire scoring five in the Top 15 of the race. That effort established the Broncos as a team capable of putting together a competitive scoring pack rather than relying solely on one front-runner.
Clovis North carried that individual strength into the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, where Sanchez clocked 17:00.0 for 10th place in the Rated race. Renney was right behind in 17:06.2, while Bosch ran 17:33.0 and junior Stephanie Arevalo finished in 17:40.2. Ariana Quigley added an 18:05.9 performance, giving the Broncos five finishers between 17:00 and 18:06. That roughly 66-second spread from first to fifth demonstrated the kind of scoring depth that can become especially valuable against California's strongest teams. Clovis North won the Rated race with a team average of 17:29 and a 1:05 spread, about 100 points ahead of the runner-up team. If you compare Clovis North's performance from the meet with the Sweepstakes race later that evening, the 17:29 spread puts the Broncos between 10th and 12th place. Astonishingly, the Broncos' 1:05 gap was faster than the 10th, 11th, and 12th place teams in the Sweepstakes race by at least one minute or more.
The ASICS Clovis XC Invitational provided another valuable championship-level test for the Broncos at Woodward Park. Clovis North finished fifth as a team in the Championship race with 193 points and an 18:36 5K team average. Over the longer distance, their gap widened just a bit to a little over 1:30. Not a terrible place to be in heading into postseason, but by adding a little back-end support over the 5K distance, Clovis North can seriously challenge the state's leading Division I squads. Compared to last year's CIF State Cross Country Championships, this Clovis North girls team was around 20 seconds faster on the Woodward Park course last weekend than they were at the state meet in November 2025.
With Sanchez and Renney providing a strong front two and Bosch, Arevalo and Quigley contributing to a competitive middle pack, Clovis North has a foundation to build on heading into the postseason. The challenge will be closing the gap between their top two runners and the rest of their lineup while maintaining consistency against elite competition. If the Broncos can keep developing that depth and carry their invitational performances into the championship races, they will be a serious issue for other teams in the CIF State Division I team battle at Woodward Park.
