During the final weekend of the 2025 indoor season, Organ Mountain (N.M.) senior Corbin Coombs and Carlsbad (Calif.) senior Makenna Herbst posted national leads as they made early-season statements.

Over the next few months, the pair will look to leave their mark on their program before they begin their collegiate careers in the fall.

Since last August, the Wake Forest signee has been a man on a mission, helping put New Mexico on the map on both the grass and the indoor oval.

Just weeks removed from the conclusion of a spectacular indoor campaign, Coombs took his talents to the Chandler Rotary Invitational where he won the 1600m and 800m with a pair of season bests.

In the longer of the two events, Coombs crossed the line in 4:06.84, taking down a talented field that included NXN Champion and National Gatorade Runner of the Year, Rio Rancho's (N.M.) Charlie Vause.

On tired legs, Coombs stepped back up to the line for the 800m, where he led 23 boys under 2:00 as he clocked 1:52.55, nearly missing his lifetime best of 1:52.40.

Before she heads to Fayetteville, Arkansas to become a Razorback in the fall, Herbst has some big plans over the next few months.

Coming off of a brief but successful stretch of racing indoors, Herbst ran her second 800m of the outdoor season at the Adidas Meet of Champions HS Distance Classic.

Herbst obliterated a star-studded field that saw 10 girls run 2:15 or faster, clocking a new national lead of 2:04.72, lowering her previous outdoor best by nearly two seconds.

Herbst is now just the ninth California girl to ever break 2:05, and just the fourth to do so since the turn of the century.

Heading into the final weekend of March racing, Herbst sits at the top of the national leaderboard and has a two-second gap on the rest of the country.
