Devin Paton (left), Darryll Stevens (right), and Cayden Roberson (not pictured) produced a wild ending in the 300-meter hurdles, without question, the craziest race finish of the 103rd CIF-State Track and Field Championships.

Sixth in a Series

Without question, the craziest race finish of the 103rd CIF-State Track and Field Championships was in the boys 300-meter hurdles. There was a three-way tie for the title that had to go out to the thousandth place to determine the order, and two boys were disqualified.

Although Monrovia (SS) senior Devin Paton was first over the last hurdle, Jordan (SS) senior Darryll Stevens finished fast to get the win in 37.432. Paton was timed in 37.435 with Roosevelt (SS) junior Cayden Roberson a fraction of a second back in third place at 37.437.

And -- AND -- Cathedral Catholic (SD) junior Vincent Atilano was just half a stride back at 37.73.

Stevens came in with the fastest qualifying time, 37.75, with Paton next at 37.96. As you'll see in the video and from Raymond Tran's photos, Paton gets turned sideways when coming over the final hurdle, losing momentum as Stevens clears it more cleanly and barely wins the sprint to the line.

Upland (SS) senior Davis Davis-Lyric won his prelim heat in 38.10 and had a season best of 37.91. He had earlier won the 110mH and was looking to extend the streak of Upland HS 300mH State Meet champions to five. It wasn't to be as Davis-Lyric tumbled over a hurdle mid-race and was DQ'd for a lane violation. Helix (SD) junior Shon Martin was also DQ'd for impeding.

Regarding that Upland streak in this event, Roberson's bother, Caleb Lutalo Roberson, was a two-time State 300mH champion in 2018-19 while at ... Upland HS.
