Seven More Teams to Watch

Albany (D-4)

Not only does this group return Sean Morello (pictured), who placed third at the State Meet, also scheduled back are junior Lucas Cohen (third at NCS, ninth in scoring at State), and seniors Ben Elfenbaum and Jack Elfenbaum among the scorers (Jack ran No. 3 and Ben No. 5 at State). The Cougars lost two of their top seven to graduation, including one scorer. Sophomore Sam Givner ran a distant No. 6 at both NCS and State an inherits the No. 5 scoring spot, at least based off returning XC bests. Sophomore Callum McBride, who went 4:56.53/10:49.61 on the track as a frosh, should challenge for a scoring spot. In the spring, Morello won the NCS title and ran 1600/3200 PRs of 4:14.21/9:00.27.

Archie Williams (D-4)

NCS runners-up in D-4 graduated five of seven who took the line at section finals. The expected returners, senior Luke Calegari, and junior Ryan Ferguson ran Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, at NCS in November.

De La Salle (D-2)
The Spartans, who placed third in the section D-2 race, return five from that lineup, including three scorers in sophomore Trey Caldwell, senior Jaydan Sanchez, and junior Alexander Eby. Sophomore Jake Lee wasn't too far back at No. 6. Senior Christopher Coleman ran No. 7 at NCS and No. 4 at State.

Dublin (D-1)
The Gaels went 1-2-3-4-5-7-27 at the NCS Division 1 race with six seniors. Rising senior Nathan Manesh ran No. 6 at NCS and No. 5 at State as Dublin placed eighth in a race where Newbury Park ran a 14:40 team time, Great Oak went 15:45 and three others ran sub-16. Dublin went 16:11 and packed at 55 seconds. Based on returning times, there's a significant dropoff behind Manesh, appearing to put the prospect of a title defense in jeopardy.

Lick Wilmerding (D-5)

The defending State and NCS champion in the small-school division returns four from that lineup, including three scores from both big post-season meets. Rising seniors Bruno Kai Ong, Haruto Uesugi, junior Sean Green, and senior Spencer Gibson ran 3-6 at State. Uesugi, Green, Ong, and Gibson went 2-3-5-6 at NCS as Lick beat senior rival San Francisco University by 65 points. Junior Liam Hillis and senior Christophe Bihan give the Cougars two more returners with sub-18 credentials for 5K.

Maria Carrillo (D-3)

The lineup that placed a close third at NCS in D-3 and a definitive third at State, returns three from the section final but just one scorer, rising senior Sean Gubera. Junior Gabe Sitton ran No. 6 at both meets and senior Jonathan Donohue ran No. 7.

Newark Memorial (D-3)
The Cougars returning only one scorer, senior Talha Ahmed, from the lineup that placed second in NCS and eighth at State. Also scheduled back is senior Chris Martinez, who was a non-scorer in both big post-season meets.
