30 Girls XC Teams to Watch: Bakersfield Highland (CS)

It's time to get fired up for cross country! Our traditional XC countdown is back, although it may look a little different this time around - our longtime data analyst Jeff George has moved on, leaving this energizing project to the MileSplit team in CA. Our collective goal is to briefly highlight 30 boys and 30 girls teams that we think will have an impact this fall. We will spotlight one team per gender per day over a 30-day period. Similar to past countdowns, we will provide a cross-sampling of teams from all 10 sections without regard to statewide or even division ranking (those will come later, as will articles previewing each section, and returning athletes to watch). As always, if you catch an error or have updated information for us, email CA state editor Jeffrey Parenti (jeffrey.parenti@flosports.tv) and we'll make the corrections.

Bakersfield Highland (CS/Division II)

Bakersfield's Highland High put together a solid 2021 season with a majority of underclassmen anchoring its success.

Mia Torrecillas and Lianna Guerra finished 1-2 to lift the Scots to the CIF Central Section Division 3 team championship at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Torrecillas' time was 18:24.14, earning her the individual title. Guerra followed in 18:42.22. Depth for the Scots came in the form of Jasmine Vasquez with a 19th-place finish (17th for scoring purposes) in 21:28.48. Lesslie Mireles was the fourth runner to finish under 30, crossing the end line in 27th (24th for scoring) place.

The section title was meaningful for Highland, which returned to Woodward Park a few weeks later and finished 18th in the CIF State Division II Championship race. Torrecillas was the top Scots runner again, going 18:10.20 for seventh overall (third for scoring). Guerra was 14th (ninth) in 18:31.40.

In the large State race, Mireles was the next Scots runner, finishing 164 (132nd) in 21:50.40. Vasquez (172/140) ran in 22:04.70 and Addison Johnson completed Highland's scoring (192/158) in 23:19.40.

Turning the page to the 2022 season where Highland moves to Division II.

Torrecillas, a junior, is coming off a strong track and field season in which she won the CIF Central Section Masters Meet 1600m to advance to the CIF State Meet. In cross-country last year, Torrecillas' PR in 5000 meters was 17:44.96 during a dual meet with Bakersfield North. Guerra and Johnson are back for their final seasons, while Vasquez and Mireles are juniors. Another returning runner is Nicole Almaguer, who is a senior.
