RECAP Stanley Leads GHC, Redmond Sparks Carson at LAC Finals

Perennial LAC girls team champion Carson dominated the competition on Thursday, led by Redmond, who swept the sprints for the second year in a row. 

Redmond won the 100-meter dash in 11.84 (-1.1) leading a 1-4 Carson sweep. She won the 200m in 24.58 (-1.2) as Carson went 1-3-5-6. 

In the 100m, juniors Samira Stevenson (12.33) and Sahara Wray (12.43) placed second and third, respectively, and freshman Kaitlyn E. Williams was fourth in 12.49. Senior Simone Terry, who swept the horizontal jumps titles, was sixth in 12.77. 

In the 200, Stevenson was third (25.32) with Wray fifth (26.27) and freshman Tiffany Williams sixth (26.32).

The Carson girls swept the relays. The team of Wray, Stevenson, Tiffany Williams, and Redmond ran 46.85 in the 4x100. Junior Mia Jamerson, sophomore Eva Walker, sophomore Jaya Westby, and, sophomore Anise Becker went 3:58.29 to win the 4x400 relay. 

It wasn't just the sprints where Carson excelled. The Colts got victories in both hurdles, with Jamerson winning the 100m hurdles in 17.17 (-1.5), and Becker winning the 300m hurdles in 46.55 as part of a 1-3 Carson sweep with Jamerson second (47.17) and Westby third (47.59).

In the field events, Terry swept the horizontal jumps, going 17-10.50 in the long jump - with junior Kylah Hyatt third at 16-09 - and 36-00 in the triple jump, to beat Granada Hills senior Janessa Morse (35-06).

Finally, Carson went 1-2-4 in the shot put with junior Mi'ah Molette defending her section title with a best of 39-02.50. Sophomore Lauryn Williams was second (37-04.50), and Jazzmine Cannon was fourth (34-09.50).

Granada Hills Charter was led by Dartmouth-bound senior Sofia Abrego, who as a freshman, swept all three of the distance races at this meet. She almost pulled off the triple again, winning the 800m in 2:18.64 and the 1600m in 5:09.55, but she placed second in the 3200m (11:41.90) behind Eagle Rock senior Keely Miyamoto (11:25.14) and just ahead of freshman teammate Meztli Velazquez (11:46.45). 

Canoga Park senior Dulce Gonzalez was second in the 800m (2:20.91) with Palisades junior Ava Baak third (2:22.76) and Carson's Eva Walker fourth (2:24.60).

In that 1600m race, New West sophomore Gabriela Nascimento was second (5:18.20) with Canoga Park's Gonzalez third (5:19.20) and a pair of Granada Hills crossing next in junior Jocelyn Pacheco (5:20.52) and senior Isabel Castagnola (5:20.64).  

Granada Hills also picked up an event win from junior Isabella Vally in the 400 (57.50) to edge Hamilton freshman Brooklyn Harris (57.76). 

King-Drew senior Esther Ikediuba won the high jump (5-2).
