Nearly a year ago, when the absence of a national cross country championship -- by virtue of the cancellations of Team Nationals and Foot Locker Nationals -- was becoming evident throughout the fall, a new player emerged on the national cross country scene.

RunningLane.

The company's decision to hold a national meet last November ultimately provided opportunities for nearly 1,000 athletes in Huntsville, Alabama, at the newly redesigned John Hunt Park. But more than that, the races last November hit big: Jenna Hutchins recorded a national 5K best for girls, while 32 boys broke 15 minutes for the distance in one race.

RunningLane had always planned to follow-up that first race with its second installment.

Then yesterday happened.

Twenty-four hours after the massive news of Team Nationals' second straight cancellation, the team behind RunningLane pivoted, changing its race date to December 4 to provide an opportunity for all high school teams and individuals in the United States to compete in a one-race, winner-take-all format, ala a true national championship.

While there will be no qualifying regional system, organizers of the race intend to recruit the best teams in the country to compete at the event in December. Over the last 24 hours, RunningLane has collaborated with important stakeholders in the high school space to generate investment for the event and received firm commitments from some of the country's top teams.

So far, the boys and girls commitments include:

  • Newbury Park's MileSplit50 No. 1 boys team and No. 4 girls team
  • Valor Christian's MileSplit50 No. 5 ranked boys team and No. 13 ranked girls team
  • Niwot's MileSplit50 No. 12 ranked boys team and No. 16 ranked girls team
  • Columbus North's No. 10 ranked boys
  • New Orleans Jesuit's No. 23 boys

And so this December, a national championship is emerging in Alabama with the RunningLane Cross Country Championships.

MileSplit will be on-site providing incredible coverage of the event via a race live stream, race recaps, interviews, race results and more.
