Central Section Guidelines for 2020-2021 Cross Country Season

All competition shall follow the current California Department of Public Health guidelines. These guidelines were set by the Central Section Cross Country Advisory Committee and approved by the Central Section Executive Committee.

These guidelines/recommendations are in addition to the CDPH and CIF State guidelines:

  • No concessions at cross country meets.

  • All members of a team will stay in their area, either designated by the meet or the coach. Teams must be distanced from each other and kept separate. Athletes are to keep their masks on in the designated area. The athletes may leave the area to use the restroom but need to return directly to their area. The athletes may leave the team area to warmup and do not need to keep their masks on during the warmup. During warmup teams try to stay separate from other teams.

  • If meet management allows spectators, then the spectators are to follow social distancing of 6 feet between household groups.

  • One of the following must be used by meet management:

    - Runners enter the starting area with masks on. Coaches collect the masks from the runners once they are at the start before the race.

Runners report to the starting line wearing a mask, then they continue to wear the mask at the gun for a few hundred yards where the mass of runners take their place along the route. Then they drop the mask off in a normal size trash can or basket. The runners may also drop the re-useable mask off at the coaches or his representative's feet as they pass. The runners also have the option of carrying or slide down the mask during the race.

One of the following must be used by meet management:

       - "Waves". For a race, runners would start at different times. Example:Teams send their top two runners to the start. When the gun goes off, the #3 and #4 runners go to the start. A minute or two minutes later after the 1st wave was started, the starter shoots the gun for the 2nd grouping. This procedure is repeated for #5, #6, & #7 runners. The time of the runner determines their finish place.

    - Have the start separated into designated "chutes" for each team. Each chute is equal width. There will be an empty chute between each team. All teams could start together or use "waves". Cones would be used to make sure no teams are in the vacant chute.

    - Have the races run in sections to reduce the number of runners in each race. Example: Have the #1, #2, and #3 runners in section one and the rest of the team in section two.

     - Dual meets and tri-meets are to be exempt from these restrictions.

  • After a runner finishes the race, they must leave the finish area immediately. They will go directly to their schools designated area. It is recommended that meet management distribute disposable masks as the athletes leave the finish area to limit the time it takes to find a mask after finishing.

  • Race results are not to be physically posted. Results are to be electronically sent. For team scores the meet director could announce through a PA system.

  • Awards are not to be given to the athlete by meet management. Meet management gives the awards to the head coach.

  • Meet management will supply personal hand sanitizer for the officials. Officials are to follow social distancing guidelines. Officials should wear masks at all times when not isolated.

  • Finish line workers should have gloves and masks. Those assisting fallen runners need a new pair of gloves after touching an individual.

  • Entry Fees for this Season. All entry fees will be determined by the meet management, including the Central Section Championships. This would apply only to this season and does not affect the Fall of 2021.
