This article highlights the results of a quarterfinal-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. No. 1 Upland (SS) vs. No. 9 Santa Margarita (SS)
Santa Margarita had an 18-0 advantage in the throws and split the relays, but top-seeded Upland had an advantage in every other event group and that was just enough -- by the narrowest margin of the tournament -- to advance to the final four in the boys bracket of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.
The 68.83-67.16 victory sends Upland (SS) into the championship semifinals against No. 12 Trabuco Hills (SS). The other semifinal is No. 3 Buchanan (CS) against No. 18 Mission Viejo (SS).
Leading the way for Upland again was versatile senior Namir Hemphill, who had top marks in the 100m and triple jump. Sophomore Delaney Crawford had the fastest time in the 200m and put up 11 points in the sprints, senior Romeo Zendejas was first in the 1600m and contributed nine points, senior Jeremiah Castellano won the 3200m and was second in the 1600m, and freshman Kai Graves-Blanks won the 110m hurdles and was second in the 300m hurdles.
Santa Margarita got points from 17 athletes led by seniors Michael Ventura and Justin Caragao, and junior Zack Morris. Ventura won the 300m hurdles, was second in the 110m hurdles and had the No. 3 time in the 200m. Caragao had the fastest time in the 400m and just edged out Ventura for second in the 200m. Morris was the Eagles top scorer as part of that throws sweep. He had the top mark in the discus and equalled the No. 2 mark in the shot.
