This article highlights the results of a quarterfinal-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events (although the program that processes the meet scores does not have access to individuals in a relay). Teams are limited to three athletes per event. Stay with us for the entire tournament to see which boys and girls teams reign supreme in this virtual meet format.

No. 10 Vista Murrieta (SS) vs. No. 18 Mission Viejo (SS)

The matchup of two of the highest-scoring boys teams in the tournament was decided by four points as No. 18 Mission Viejo (SS) eliminated No. 10 Vista Murrieta (SS) in the quarterfinal round of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.

An eight-point advantage in the sprints appears to have made the difference here for the Diablos, led by junior Peter Costelli, who had the fastest time in the 100m and added three more second-place points in the 200m.

Mission Viejo also earned the lone five points in the 4x100 relay, undoubtedly including Costelli, whose 10.96 from a March 5 meet ranks CA No. 7 for wind-legal sprints achieved before the 2020 season was stopped.

Mission Viejo, which equalled the highest point total of the tournament when it scored 114 in a first-round victory, survived here with just 70 points.

Vista Murrieta, which scored 103 in a second-round victory, had a six-point edge in the hurdles, led by eight points from senior Hunter Escorciaand a four-point margin in the throws, led by a double win from senior Edward Ta'amilo.

Mission Viejo senior John Burns was the virtual's only other double winner, claiming five first-place points in both the 400m and 300m hurdles.

Among other Mission Viejo boys to bring in points from multiple events: junior Luke Santagata (8 points) in the 800m and 1600m; senior Jaycen Cash (9) in the 110mH, high jump and triple jump; junior Bryce Bushnell (6) in the 200m and 400m, and junior Micah Carreon (4) in the discus throw and shot put.

For Vista Murrieta, senior Michael Holland contributed eight points (800m, 1600m), and junior
Noah Murasmith added five points (800m, 1600m, 3200m).
