This article highlights the results of a quarterfinal-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. No. 4 St. Francis (SJ) vs. No. 5 Buchanan (CS)
With 18 athletes contributing, Corie Smith leading the way in the distances, and Lauren Fowler pulling five-point wins on the track and in the sandbox, the Buchanan girls moved on with a 30-point margin over No. 4 St. Francis (SJ) in a quarterfinal-round victory of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.
Coach Brian Weaver's Bears pulled in points in every event except the 100m. Smith's fast times -- both CA ranked No. 2 -- in the 1600m and 3200m provided 10 of the team's 12 points in the distance category to offset the St. Francis duo of Isabella Fauria and Cate Joaquin, who combined for seven in those two events.
Fowler had the fastest time in the 200m and also out-jumped two teammates in the long jump as part of an 18-0 sweep in the sandbox.
Other event winners for Buchanan were junior Alexa Dandridge (300mH), sophomore Maddy Passmore (TJ), senior Hannah Davis (SP) and senior McKenna Chaney (DT).
Fauria, a senior headed to New Mexico, had the fastest time in the 800m and was second to Smith in the 1600m. Joaquin, a sophomore, was second in the 3200m. Also for Sacramento-based St. Francis, junior Reyna Johnson had top marks in the 100m dash and 100m hurdles, sophomore Grace Heisinger had the best 400m time, senior Isabella Palchak was tops in the high jump, and junior Molly Chambers contributed five points in the pole vault.
