This article highlights the results of a quarterfinal-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events (although the program that processes the meet scores does not have access to individuals in a relay). Teams are limited to three athletes per event. Stay with us for the entire tournament to see which boys and girls teams reign supreme in this virtual meet format.

No. 3 Buchanan (CS) vs. No. 11 Loyola (SS)

Senior Kyler Van Grouw led a sweep of the throws and that as much as anything helped lift No. 3 Buchanan (CS) over No. 11 Loyola (SS) to a quarterfinal-round victory in the boys bracket of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Dual Meet Tournament.

Van Grouw's marks in both throws contributed 10 of the Bears' 18 points in the discus and shot put. Senior Max Wilson also scored in both events for Buchanan.

Loyola gave plenty of pushback, with junior Ceyair Wright leading a 21-6 advantage in the sprints with fast-times in both the 100m and 200m. UCLA-bound senior Anthony Stone pulled in five points with the best time in the 1600m, senior Evan Cantrell led a sweep of the 300m hurdles, junior Zakhari Spears added five points in the high jump, as did junior Noah Bustos in the long jump (he also scored in the 100m).

In its second-round victory over Mater Dei (SS), we noted how Buchanan got points from 18 athletes. Even in a more competitive meet (by nearly 10 points), the Bears were still able to get an impressive number of boys on the scoreboard.

Of the 16 scores, five scored in multiple events with Van Grouw as the only double winner. The others, aside from the aforementioned Wilson, are junior Austin Gillen in the 400m (1st) and 800m (2nd), senior Ronnie Barrett in the 800m (1st) and 1600m (2nd) and junior Sebastian McGehee-Adams in the 3200 (1st) and 1600 (3rd).

Barrett's 1:55.79 for 800m from the Sanger Spring Classic (March 7) ranks CA No. 6 for marks achieved before the 2020 outdoor season was suspended. His 4:22.09 for 1600m from the Buchanan Distance Classic (Feb. 28) ranks CA No. 20. Both are PRs for the Fresno State commit.

Doubling back on TCU-bound Van Grouw, his discus PR of 193-8 from the Bobby Bass Sprint Carnival (Feb. 29) and his shot put PR of 58-0 (from Sanger) rank CA No. 2 and No. 6, respectively.

Other event winners for Buchanan were senior Tamar Archie (110mH), freshman Brody Bendoski (TJ), and senior Jarred Acosta (PV).
