No. 4 GREAT OAK (SS) vs. No. 29 JSERRA (SS)

In a real dual, it is hard to believe Great Oak would ever get obliterated in the distances. Even in a virtual dual, it's hard to fathom the distance juggernaut ever losing its specialty.

But in the March Madness world of this virtual dual meet track tournament, Great Oak did lose its specialty yet advanced with a 94-41 victory over JSerra in a first-round boys bracket matchup.

JSerra senior Anthony Grover had the fastest times in the 800m and 1600m and junior teammate Kennie Arriola had the top time in the 400 and the No. 2 times in the 800m and 1600m as JSerra won the distances, 22-5 and, adding the sprints, outscored Great Oak 40-14.

(The times for the Wake Forest-bound Grover in the 800 (1:55.75) and 1600 (4:17.91) both rank No. 5 in the state based on results from the first three-plus weeks before the outdoor season was interrupted.)

But the Wolfpack's versatility across multiple event categories is a major reason for their No. 4 overall seeding in this 32-team event.

Great Oak won the jumps, 34-1, won both relays and put up 18-0 shutouts in both the throws and hurdles.

Junior Cole Bramante had the the top time in the 110 hurdles and claimed third-place in the 300s behind senior Devin Davis and freshman Ryder Nord. Freshman Jason Pugal had the top marks in both the long jump and triple jump.

Junior Jack Wright and senior Kyle Yonker are both 15-foot pole vaulters and the throws group is led by James Wright (Jack's twin) and senior Nicholas Meeker. James Wright had the best marks in both throws with Meeker second in both.

Next: Great Oak will be match with the first-round winner between No. 13 Central (CS) and No. 20 Newport Harbor (SS).
