This article highlights the results of first-round dual as part of the MileSplitCA March Madness Virtual Meet Tournament. Virtual meets are scored based solely on 2020 results using the standard dual meet scoring points format of 5-3-1 for individuals and 5-0 for relays. Athletes are scored in no more than four events. No. 14 MISSION VIEJO (SS) vs. No. 19 MILLIKAN (SS)


Despite sophomore Samarra Monrroy winning the 200m and 400m sprints and playing a key role on both winning relays, Millikan was no match for mighty Mission Viejo in the first-round girls virtual team dual meet. 

No doubt, Monrroy, the State Meet runner-up in the 400m last spring, is a force, accounting for 20 of her team's 26 points. But, as has been a clear reality of this virtual tournament, it takes more than one superstar to advance. 

Mission Viejo had nine individuals with top marks in their events, including two who doubled up in their specialty -- senior Gianna Martino with top times in both hurdles, and junior Sara Pettinger with top marks in both throws. 

Among others contributing to Mission Viejo's points haul:
  • Senior Ashley Johnson had the top time in the 1600m and the No. 2 time in the 800m.
  • Senior Elizabeth Jezek had the best long jump distance, the No. 2 time in the 100m and earned a third-place point in the triple jump.
  • Sophomore Brooke Said had the No. 2 time behind Monrroy in the 200m and 400m and tied for the No. 3 time in the 100m.
