Although the Chico boys team has gotten more attention from us in recent years, the Panthers' girls squad might be the better of the two in 2019. A lot of that depends on depth: they return a solid top 5, but drop off to the 6th runner. Spring results show some encouraging progress on that front, as Amanda Harris improved enough to run with the top seven in the 1600. The other factor that makes me think the depth will be there is the Panthers' recent track record for season-to-season improvement, which ranks in the top 10 in the state over that period. With Nakia Clements out front, this group is capable of making the state meet. Rival Foothill (Palo Cedro) will have something to say about that, of course, and their 8th-place finish in the Division 3 state meet race in 2018 has set a high standard for the Northern Section to follow. Just for reference, Chico rates as the #4 returning team in all of Division 3 coming into the season...
