The MileSplitCA All-State teams are subjective selections with heavy consideration given to performance at the CIF-State Meet Finals, top placing at section finals, season-long consistency at a high level, and versatility. Top marks within the class is a consideration but not a guarantee of making the first or second teams. Performances at the end of the season are weighed more heavily than those at the beginning of the season.
In compiling the teams, we make a point of filling every event category and that each event within those categories is accounted for if at all possible, making versatility at a high level an important criteria in our decision process.
At the CIF-State Championships at Clovis Buchanan HS on Memorial Day Weekend, in this group of senior girls, there are eight event winners, seven runners-up, and eight who placed third. There were 31 senior girls who stood on the podium, 10 who did it twice including one -- Jazlynn Shearer -- who won two event titles and placed second in a third for three trips to the awards platform.
With that type of high-end depth, It took a top-three finish or a double-finalist with at least a top-five placing -- with one exception -- to make our first team.
Of the 20 senior girls who made the second team, 11 had fourth-through-sixth podium finishes, and there are six others who just missed the podium, placing seventh.
Making results at the State Meet the baseline criteria forces difficult decisions -- especially for the 20-athlete first team -- regarding top athletes who didn't make it as far as atop or near the podium at the State Meet because of injury or other reasons that may have been out of their control. We tried to recognize those athletes on the second team and our 41-member honorable mention list.
