Countdown to XC Day 18: JSerra Boys

Now, cross country fans, I bring you a true rarity: a successful boys cross country team that didn't have a single senior in its top 15! In fact, JSerra finished 8th in Division 4 at the state meet last year with two freshmen and a sophomore in their top 7, and that sophomore was #1 runner Anthony Grover. The 2018 edition of the Lions, however, will likely have 4 seniors on the squad, and that kind of leadership should add motivation to the team's summer training. JSerra posted the state's 6th-best returning team 1600 ranking this past spring, led by Grover's 4:13 and Peter Herold's 4:17 (they both went under 9:20 as well) - and those kind of numbers are even rarer for a small school. With that kind of depth and another year of experience, I feel confident saying this team will be in contention for the Division 4 crown come November. Considering how much rising sophomore talent is on this team (4 of their top 9 were freshmen last fall), this team could be around for a while, too.

The purpose of the Countdown To XC is not to predict the top 30 teams in the state for the upcoming season (although we certainly hope that the top 15-20 teams are included in the countdown at some point). The goal is to recognize thirty teams to watch as cross country begins, using data to uncover squads with strengths that stand out from the pack. The countdown is also not meant to be in a strict order, because it's impossible to sort out several teams of similar strength at this point of the season.
