There was no surprise in the team race where state No. 4 Sage Creek put all five of its scorers in the top 11 for just 32 points. The individual race was something else. Nader Ali, who landed in San Diego two years ago from Egypt where the family moved while fleeing Sudan, took the lead halfway through the race and beat defending champ Brad Nelson by 14 seconds in 15:55.1. "Man, I'm not even tired," said Ali of the upset victory. "I'm going to go all out at state."
