California State Track and Field Meet: Running Events Preview

400 Meters

Girls Favorite: Hannah Waller Buchanan (CE) 53.57
Leading Contenders: Kirsten Carter Santa Rosa (NCS) 54.24 & Taylor Smith E. Roosevelt (SS) 54.46
State Meet Record: Monique Henderson Morse (SDS) 50.74

The home crowd will be cheering wildly for the local favorites which includes Hannah Waller of host school, Buchanan. She has the season best time of 53.57 which she recorded at the Arcadia Invitational. With defending champion Kaelin Roberts of Long Beach Poly out with a season ending injury, Waller will be the strong favorite here but it won't be easy. Santa Rosa freshman Kirsten Carter has dabbled in many events this season but now has her sites set on the 400 and 200 races. She recorded the second fastest time in CA at last week's NCS MOC rallying from behind in the final 100 meters. Taylor Smith of E. Roosevelt won the SS Masters meet with her season best time and will be after valuable team points here.

Boys Favorite: Michael Norman Vista Murrieta (SS) 45.91
Leading Contenders: Mar-yea Harris Wilson (SS) 47.21 & Gabe Warner Woodbridge (SS) 47.31
State Meet Record: Calvin Harrison North Salinas (CCS) 45.25 1993

When you look up overwhelming favorite in the dictionary (or is it Wikipedia now?), you might find a picture of Michael Norman of Vista Murrieta. He is the only sprinter in this field to not only faster than 47 seconds but 46 seconds as well. His personal best time of 45.91 was achieved at the Arcadia Invitational when he had some competition from out of state. The race will definitely be for second between the 2nd and 3rd place finishers at the SS meet, Mar'yea Harris of Wilson and Gabe Warner of Woodbridge.
