2018 Central Coast Section XC Detailed Preview

Division 2 Boys

Teams to Watch (Full Rankings)

For many years, the Bellarmine boys dominated the WCAL as well as many of the section finals. St. Francis, Mt. View has had very solid teams and even won a Division III state championship in 1998. Last season, the Lancers rose to the top of WCAL and won another section title with a near-perfect score of 16. They also won their 2nd state title in Division II and qualified for the NXN race as they became the first team from CCS to advance to the national meet. They will be strong favorites to repeat as league, section and state titles and will be one of the leading contenders to qualify to NXN from California. With St. Francis as an absolute lock, the team that will vie for the 2nd place finish will be Willow Glen. Under the guidance of longtime coach,  Victor Santamaria, Willow Glen has been one of the top teams in the section for many years. WCAL teams Archbishop Mitty and Serra will hope to join St. Francis to the state meet provided they can sneak in with a hard earned third place finish.

Athletes to Watch (Full Rankings)

With the top two finishers from last year meet graduated, the favorite to win the individual section title will be St. Francis senior, Colton Colonna. He will be quite familiar with his competition as it will more than likely come from several of his teammates. Fellow seniors Eric Eng and Daniel Skahill along with rising junior Juan Pablo Garcia. Willow Glen junior Marco Del Canto kept St. Francis from the clean sweep and will be looking to break up the Lancer group once again this season. Another runner to watch is Westmont junior Garrett MacQuiddy. He finished in 24th place in the Division III section final after running near the lead for the first half of the course. He more than made up for his tough finish this past spring as MacQuiddy rolled to 1:55.65/4:16.54/9:41.59 personal bests. His 1600m time qualified him to the state meet and will be a great confidence builder for his upcoming XC season.
