Redlands East Valley senior Elias Opsahl came in with the fastest time from combined prelim heats and appeared to be on his way to the division title before Canyon junior Ethan Danforth reeled him in and out-sprinted him to the finish in 14:50.20.
While Opsahl was fourth here last year and the top returner fro 2016, Danforth was 30th in one of three preliminary heats last year and failed to qualify for the section final.
Newport Harbor junior Alexis Garcia, 10th as a sophomore, was third overall (14:57.20) and the only other runner under 15 minutes in the race that went off later in the morning after the winds picked up.
Junior Ryan Congill was 11th overall (15:16.70) to lead team champion Claremont. Two other juniors, Aaron Reyes (15:23.80) was 16th and Vicente Huerta (15:27.10) was 19th as part of a 108-point winning total for Claremont, which was third last year. Saugus, seventh last year, was second.
