WCAL Championship Meet Preview

1600 Meters

Varsity Girls League Record: Amanda Thornberry Valley Christian SJ 4:53.65 2003
At-Large Mark: 5:06.35
Varsity Boys League Record: Scott Robinson Bellarmine 4:15.38 1987
At-Large Mark: 4:23.28

Emily Skahill (St. Francis) has the fastest entry time here with the 5:06.67 season best she recorded at the K-Bell Invitational early in the season. She has dealt with an injury during this season but if she is healthy, Skahill should win this race rather easily. The battle for the 2nd section qualifying spot should be between Presentation freshman, Gianna Mendoza (5:17.14) and St. Francis junior, Madeleine Coli (5:19.36).

The favorite to win the boys' 1600 meters will be Bellarmine junior Alex Scales. He has had an amazing season that included the fastest time in California for the 800 meters (1:50.64) and anchoring his Distance Medley Relay team at the Penn Relays to victory. St. Francis Colton Colonna dipped under the 4:20 mark at the CCS Top 8 Meet with a time of 4:19.87. He should be able to qualify by finishing behind Scales. The runner that has run faster than the at-large mark with a best of 4:22.88 is Bellarmine senior Dylan Doblar. He will need to make sure the pace is stiff enough to run under the at-large mark once again or else, he will need to finish in the top two positions.
