Alyssa Brewer California (NCS) The girls 800 meters has become the toughest distance race over the past few seasons. In 2015, despite the addition of four more qualifiers to final, Juliana Mount of Notre Dame SJ (CCS) failed to make the state final despite running 2:09.55. Heading into the 2016 season, the favorites included the top 3 finishers from the previous season, Erica Schroeder (San Marcos), Rylee Penn (Centennial) and Jacquelyn Hill (Etiwanda). Alyssa Brewer (photo above courtesy of Doug Duran/Bay Area News Group) ran a now pedestrian 2:14.54 as a freshman in 2015 and was on nobody's radar as a state meet contender in the 800. That all changed at the Sacramento Meet of Champions when Brewer blasted away from the field in the final 250 to win in 2:09.61. She continued to double in the 400/800 through the NCS MOC meet where she finished in 4th place in the 400. She ran like a savvy veteran at the state meet and won in a new personal record of 2:06.86.
