21. Monte Vista
On the one hand, the Mustangs made it to the state meet last year. On the other hand, they finished 19th in the Division 1 race at Woodward park. Back to the first hand, though, Monte Vista returns all 7 runners from that squad, including three rising seniors that surely want to lead the way to a better finish this fall. The 2015 Mustangs are noteworthy in part because of their tightly-packed top 5, and they have some depth behind that, as well. With solid track results from several of the the returners, including returning #1 Tristan Miller, it looks like this team is on track to try to crack the top 10 in Division 1 this year.

22. Rubidoux
The Falcons graduated their top 3 runners from the CIF State Meet, where they finished 4th in the Division 3 race. Despite that, our database has Rubdoux ranked among the top 20 returning programs in the state, and there is some historical basis for that. This school graded out 15th among the 40+ teams I evaluated for year-to-year improvement over the past 3 cross country seasons. The projected top 4 for the Falcons are separated by only 32 seconds (44 seconds from 1 to 5), and that pack could help offset the loss of so much firepower up top. Depth is a concern, and Rubidoux's track results were also a little thin, so development is the name of the game this summer.

23. Campolindo
If you do a Google image search for "Campolindo cross country," pretty much the entire top 3 rows of pictures will be of the girls' team. That's not entirely fair, because the Cougar boys have been pretty good over the last decade! This is the team that finished 9th in the Division 3 race at the state meet last November, and the 2015 squad has 5 runners back with experience from that race. Jared Yabu and Nathaniel Suerberg both had solid spring track seasons, making them look like sub-16 guys for the upcoming season. There is no Thomas Joyce on this team, but if the Cougars can cultivate some depth they have a chance to be top 5 at Woodward Park when the season ends.

24. Burroughs
One of the problems with ranking teams statistically across the whole state of California is the variance in course lengths. You have full 5K's like Stanford and Woodward park, but then you also have coursed like Mt. SAC and Crystal Springs, which are less than 3 miles. Given that, plus the fact that we don't always get all the small, weekday meet results, some of the depth runners on the state's bigger teams may not have the right race distances on their profiles to be picked up in our returning rankings. Consequently, it can be hard to judge returning team strength, and Burroughs is a perfect example. The Burros only have 4 returners with 5K times in our database, so they don't show up in returning team rankings; on the other hand, they rank 13th when you look at 3 Mile times (as shown below), but a lot of teams in the northern half of the state don't have enough times at that distance to make a fair comparison. Burroughs also has strong track results, though, ranking them 15th in the state in the team 1600, and that helps them earn a spot here. Frankly, like Brea Olinda, this team could be ranked higher if you looked at different combinations of statistics; after all, the Burros did finish 4th in the CIF Division I race last year, though they lost their top 3 from that race. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see this squad back in the top 10 again this year.

25. Cathedral City
This is one of the youngest returning teams in the top 30: the Lions had only 1 senior and only 2 juniors on the team that finished 8th in the CIF Division 4 championship race. Cathedral City projects to have three seniors in the top 7 for 2015, so this is a good year for them to move up! With two rising sophomores that have already been to the state meet, there is still a lot of room for improvement here - and based on track times, one of those freshmen (Anthony Perez) looks like he can push for a spot in the top 5 this fall. Here's an interesting fact about Division 4: every team that beat Cathedral City at the state meet last year lost at least 3 seniors out of their top 7 from that race. If the Lions' returning 4-5-6 can close the gap on their solid 1-2-3, this team could be a dark horse title contender.
