The California State Meet Continues: Finals

1600 Meter Run

 

 

Academy of Our Lady of Peace senior, Sammy Silva won the 1600 meter run in 4:47.67. Second place went to junior Chloe Curtis from Redondo (4:49.02) with Staci Foster (Sr., Lutheran Orange) placing third.

University City senior Mac Fleet won the 1600 meter run at the California Track and Field State Meet with a personal best time of 4:05.33.

 

Fleet and sophomore Elias Gedyon(Loyola) settled in with the pack while James Cameron (Sr., Mission Viejo) jumped out into an early lead but by the half way mark, Fleet and Gedyon caught up and passed Cameron with Fleet taking the lead and Gedyon following on his shoulder. At the bell for the final lap Fleet continued to press forward as Toby Villalva (Sr., El Toro) serged passed Gedyon who moved back into 2nd with 200 meters to go. Gedyon finish 2nd in 4:07.26 with Villalva 3rd in 4:09.90

 

Gedyon currently holds the US#2 spot with a converted mile time of 4:07.25.

 

Fleet will take over the #1 position on the US leader board and Gedyon will move into 3rd place behind Chris Stogsdill (Sr., Marcellus High, NY).

 100 & 300 Meter Hurdles

 

 

 

Kori Carter doubles!

Four hurdlers went under 14 seconds in the 100 high hurdles but it was Kori Carter (Jr., Claremont) who took home the gold with a person best time of 13.59. Katie Nelms (Jr., Leland) took 2nd in 13.95 with Karynn Dunn (Sr., Diamond Ranch) in 3rd (13.96) and Monisha Davis (Sr., Etiwanda) finishing 4th (13.98).

 

Carter shares the US #1 spot with Monisha Davis who had the fastest time in yesterdays prelims with 13.59.

 

Carter also won the 300 meter hurdles in 41.26. Nyjah Cousar (Sr., Wilson Long Beach) took second with 41.70 and Ericka Nowell (Sr., Perris) finished 3rd in 41.80.

Carter's personal best in the 300 hurdles is 41.09 and is the #1 time in the US this season.

 

 

 

 

 

 110 Meter Hurdles

 

 

 

 

 

 

Taft junior, Dale Morgan, moved to US#6 with his 13.76 time in the 110 hurdles. Kevin Finley (Jr., Granite Hills) finished 2nd in 14.04 with Jeremy Harris (Sr., Dorsey) placing 3rd.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 300 Meter Hurdles 

 

 

 

 

 

Reggie Wyatt doubles in 300 hurdles and 400 dash.

 

300 hurdle national record holder, Reggie Wyatt (Sr., La Sierra), became the California State Champion in the 300 hurdles after winning the event in 36.71.

 

100 hurdles state champion, Dale Morgan, finished 2nd in 36.98 and Dante Thomas (Jr., Fairfield) finished 3rd in 37.23.

 

400 Meter Dash

 

Wyatt won the 400 meter dash in 46.13 (US#3). Josh Mance (Jr., Chino Hills) finished 2nd in 46.41 (US#6) and Robert Woods (Jr., Serra) took 3rd in 46.67 (US#9).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was a photo finish for the 400 meter dash as Turquoise Thompson (Sr., Serra) edge out sophomore Akawkaw Ndipagbor (Polytech Long Beach) for the State Championship. Thompson's time of 53.10 moves her to CA#1 and US#2. Ndipagbor's finish in 53.12 puts her at CA#2 and US#3.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

100 Meter Dash

 

Randall Carroll (Sr., Cathedral) holds the US#1 (10.30) spot for the 100 meter dash and can add the 100 meter dash state title to his accomplishments. Carroll finished the race in 10.38 with Kyle Middlebrooks (Jr., Fountain Valley) taking 2nd in 10.57 and sophomore George Atkinson (Granada) finishing 3rd in 10.66.

 

200 Meter Dash

 

Carroll also won the 200 meter dash in 21.08 (US#6) with sophomore DeAnthony Thomas (Crenshaw) taking second in 21.35 and Tevin Carter (Jr., Santee) finishing third in 21.44.

 

Velexsia Droughn (So., Rio Mesa) upset 100 meter dash favorite Jessica Davis (Jr., Highland) for the State Title. Droughn finished the race in 11.54 with Davis taking 2nd in 11.61 and Tenille Stoudemire (Sr., Rancho Bernardo finishing 3rd in 11.71. All 9 runners finished under 12 seconds.

 

 800 Meter Run

 

 

Aly Drake (Sr., Valencia, shown in photo in back on right) battled with Carlyle Davis (Sr., Marlborough, shown in photo on left with red headband) for the State Title in the 800 meter run. Drake squeaked out the win in 2:07.45 (US#5) with Davis finishing second in 2:07.82 (US #6) and Paisley Pettway (Jr., Millikan, shown in photo in yellow) taking third in 2:08.57 (US#9).

 

Justine Fedronic (Sr., Carlmont) who was the California leader in the 800 with a time of 2:09.27 and US #10 was unable to compete due to a stress fracture.

 

Sean Krinik (Jr., Valencia) had the fastest 800 prelim time of 1:51.42 (US #7) going into the finals and finished the event in 1:51.83 to win the state title. Matt Case (Sr., Del Campo) took second in 1:52.47 and Nathanael Litwiller (Sr., Clayton Valley) finished 3rd in 1:52.66.

 

 

 200 Meter Dash

 

St. Elizabeth junior Ashton Purvis had a tough time after her false start during the 100 meter dash prelims, however, she went on to clock the fastest time in the 200 prelims of 23.51 moving her into the US#3 spot.

 

Purvis improved on her prelim time when she won the state title in the 200 meter finals in 23.46. Purvis shares US#2 with Kimberlyn Duncan of Cypress Springs Texas.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 3200 Meter Run

 

Jordan Hasay (Sr., Mission College Prep) won her fourth straight 3200 meter State Championship title at the California State Meet. The only runner in California history to do so.

 

Hasay's 10:05.29 win in the 3200 moves her to US#1 and caps off a very successful high school prep career.

 

Molly Grabill (So., Rancho Bernardo) finished second in 10:23.75 and Kaylin Mahoney (So., Saugus) took 3rd in 10:27.70.

 

 

A strong contender for the 3200 all season, Arcadia 3200 meter champion Alex Dunne (Sr., San Clemente) would have been Hasay's biggest challenge. Recently Dunne has been dealing with tendonitis in her left foot (see journal entry #5) and has spent her last few weeks cross training. Dunne stayed with Hasay for the first two laps of the 3200 but was unable to finish the race.

 

 

 

 

 

Last year at the California State Meet, Chris Schwartz (Sr., Foothill/Bakersfield) set a personal best time of 8:58.50 in the 3200 finishing second behind German Fernandez but this track and field season Schwartz's season best was 9:12.........until now.

 

Schwartz set a personal best time of 8:51.60 in the 3200 meter run, winning the state title and moving him to the US#1 spot. Collin Jarvis (Sr., Rancho Buena Vista) took second with a personal best of 8:53.78 (US#2) and Heyden Wooff (So., Camarillo) finished third in 8:55.16 (US#4), also a personal best.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Field Events

 

 

 

National Record holder Anna Jelmini (Sr., Shafter) won both the shot put and the discus throw.

 

Jelmini, who already holds the US#1 spots in both events, threw the shot put 50-05.75 and the discus in 186-09.

 

Jackie Alhoo (Sr., St. Mary's) took second in the shot put with a throw of 45-07.25 and Jasmine Burrell (Jr., Torrance) finished third with 45-01.25.

 

Stockdales Alex Collatz finished second in the Discus with a throw of 163-01 and Rebecca Hammar (So., Buhach Colony) took third throwing 140-02.

 

 

Frontier thrower Matt Darr threw the shot put 62-01.25 and the discus 192-00 to win the title in both events.

 

Austin Field (Sr., Arroyo Grande) took second in the shot put (61-05.50) and Kevin Graf (Sr., Agoura) finished third (59-07.75).

 

Willy Irwin (Clovis East) threw the discus 188-08 to finish second and Cecil Whiteside (Jr., Newport Harbor) came in third with a throw of 183-11.

 

 

In the girls high jump, the favorite and US #2, Tara Richmond (Jr., Polytech Long Beach) was upset by Carondelet junior Adrienne Johnson. Both girls jumped 5-08 but Johnson made the jump in fewer attempts.

 

Another upset came in the girls Pole Vault. Both Allison Koressel (Sr., Huntington Beach) and Mackenzie Landry (So., Del Oro) are tied at US#1 with jumps of 13-1 but were unable to make their PR. US #5 Kortney Ross (Jr., Westview) had a phenomenal night by jumping a personal best of 13-4 bettering her previous PR by 4 inches. Ross now holds the US#1 spot in the Pole Vault.

 

Karynn Dunn (Sr., Diamond Ranch) jumped 20-03.25 to win the long jump event. Alitta Boyd (Sr., Moreau Catholic) took second with a jump of 20-02.00 and Ashtyn Baltimore (Sr., Marlborough) finished third in 19-03.75.

 

Ciarra Brewer (So., James Logan) jumped to a personal best of 42-11.50 in the triple jump to claim the state title. Alitta Boyd finished second in 42-04.25 and Melia Cox (So., Polytech Long Beach) took third in 40-07.50. Brewer's jump moved her to US#1 previously held by Boyd (42-10.5)

 

High jumper Nick Ross (Sr., Vista Murrieta, pictured right) jumped 7-01 to win the state title. Second place went to Ayala senior Obum Gwacham with a jump of 6-11 and J Serra junior Harrison Steed finished third with a jump of 6-09.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The boys Pole Vault event was won by Michael Woepse (Jr., Mater Dei) when he vaulted 16-05. Mike Peterson (Clovis East) and Mike Starr (Sr., Folsom) both jumped 15-11 but Peterson had fewer attempts and placed second.

 

In the long jump Chase Wheeler (Sr., De La Salle) jumped 25-02.25 to win the state title. Aaron Bradley (Sr, Gahr) finished second with a jump of 25-00.50 and Devin Harrison (So., Dana Hills) jumped 23-04 for third place.

 

Hammed Suleman (Sr., Deer Valley) jumped 49-07.50 to win the triple jump. Johnny Carter (Ridgeview) came in second with a jump of 48-09.50 and Obum Gwacham (Sr., Ayala) finished third with 48-04.

 

 

Relays

 

The Long Beach Polytech girls team of sophomore Carisma Lyday, sophomore Melia Cox, senior Destiny Grammage and sophomore Akawkaw Ndipagbor won the 4x100 meter relay in 45.88 (US#5).

 

The Serra boys team of Marcus Johnson (Jr.), Devan Spann (Jr.), Anthony Carpenter (Sr.), and Robert Woods (Jr.) won the 4x100 meter relay in 40.67 moving to US#1.

 

The Serra girls won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:42.91 (US#4). The team consisted of freshman Maya Brown, sophomore Dawnielle Baucham, freshman Urina Harrell and senior Turquoise Thompson.

 

The boys of Lutheran Orange won the 4x400 meter relay running a time of 3:14.53 (US#8). Senior Ishia Huss, senior Terrance Brown, junior Damani Wilson and senior Kyle Dravis ran the legs of the winning relay.
