Foot Locker Nationals 2007

As the 2013 cross country season looms, we look back to 2007. Wellington's Ashley Brasovan defeated recently turned pro and Oregon star Jordan Hasay to take the Foot Locker National championship. What a season it's been for California's Christine Babcock. The Woodbridge H.S. senior ran 10:04.03 for 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational, taking Jordan Hasay to the line and running one of the top ten fastest times ever in the event. However, Babcock really broke onto the national landscape when she ran 4:36.57 for 1600m at her Master Section Championships, one of the fastest times ever run. At the California State Championships this past weekend Babcock ran the fastest 1600m ever with her winning time of 4:33.82, and when converted ranks her as the second fastest miler in prep history. While this might be the heart of the track and field season, cross country simply cannot stay out of the headlines.  A source close to MileSplit explained this past weekend that Nike Team Nationals (NTN) will be undergoing a name change in 2008 to Nike Cross Nationals (NXN).  For well over a year rumors have swirled about that Nike would include an individual aspect to their already successful team nationals, and that possibility now seems to be a reality.

South Carolina senior Luke Lovelace (above) competed in his second consecutive Foot Locker National competition last Saturday.  Lovelace finished thirty-fourth overall and capped his high school cross country career with his best season yet.  See what Lovelace says about the exciting weekend and all its happenings.

(Photos by John Herzog)Durkin finishes fifth and Infled 13th!  Four female runners from Ohio qualified at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional held on November 24th in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The ladies are: Claire Durkin of Worhington Kilbourne; Emily Infeld of Beaumont; Chelsea Oswald of Walsh Jesuit; and Stephanie Morgan of Barnesville.  Congratulations Claire Durkin on finishing fifth and being an All-American.  Other Ohio finishers were Emily Infeld, 13th place, Chelsea Oswald, 31st, and Stephanie Morgan, 35th.  These ladies have had outstanding Cross Country seasons, and at OHRunners we look forward to seeing how well they compete in the upcoming Track and Field seasons. Mike Fout (IN) racing to the finish, winning the boys title(Photo by John Herzog)Running as a true underdog despite winning Foot Locker Midwest, Indiana's Michael Fout ran an incredibly smart race to win the Foot Locker Nationals Boys Race. As the race pushed on minute by minute Fout put himself in position to win, finally opening a slight lead before the second run up the big hill.  A strong field pushed the pace early, with the top finishers getting up front.  At the end though it was the strong kick of Fout's earning the victory.

 Stan's 3 Foot Locker Finalists Midlothian coach Stan Morgan had coached cross country for years without a Foot Locker finalist. While he still has to catch up to good friend and Mountain View coach Dave Davis who had his fifth qualifier this past weekend in San Diego with two-time qualifier Thomas Porter, Morgan was able to get his first finalist in the form of a trio with Michael Hammond, Kathleen Lautzenheiser, and Jason Witt. The only school to have sent more from Virginia in the same year was in 1979 with 4 athletes from Virginia High. (Photo by John Herzog) Virginia had a fair showing at Foot Locker Nationals. Nothing to jump out of the seat over, but the fact that the state had six athletes make the trip reflects highly of the talent in Virginia as well as the fantastic seasons by all six in order to earn their trip to San Diego. Aurora Scott wrapped up an incredible career at Foot Locker Nationals with her third All-American honor with a seventh place finish of 17:46. She joins very elite company with achieving the feat on three occassions. Meanwhile, Midlothian senior Jason Witt (pictured left by John Herzog) nearly became an All-American as well as he finished two seconds and one place off top 15 with a 16th place time of 15:43. Virginia will have to wait another year to see if they can have a boy crack into the top 15 as it has been since 2002 that a qualifier from the state has earned All-American honors at Balboa Park. Chris Derrick and Kevin Havel finished their seasons on a high note.  All season long these two runners distinguished themselves as two of the best runners in the country.  Derrick entered as a pre-race favorite, while many predicted Havel somewhere between 12-20.  Congrats to both Chris and Kevin on amazing cross country careers!Kevin Havel Post-Race InterviewChris Derrick Post-Race Interview

 Oh there were plenty of doubters!  There were doubts that she could qualify through Footlocker South--a course that jinxed her for the prior two years.  And then there were doubters after she qualified with a 6th place finish out of the South region.  But you'd be hard pressed to find any doubters today!Ashley ran what was described by many as the "perfect race" and it was exactly what Coach Doug Butler had prescribed that she do.  Brasovan went out conservatively, hanging roughly around 10th place.  Then slowly she started moving up in the pack... to 7th... to 5th.  At about the 1.75 mile mark, she really started to make her move.  At that point, Jordan Hassay of California had a big lead and looked like she would take it home--although some said Hassay looked weathered even early in the race despite her leading.  Ashley moved into second place just before the 2.5 mile mark.  She then whiddled away at Hassay's lead and finally took the lead for good with about 600 to go.  Her lead grew and Hassay got caught.The rest of the Florida girls also ran great races.... four girls qualifiers and national championship!  What a great day for Florida!  Tons of coverage, photos, videos, results, and articles are up.  Click the headline for coverage.

  If one were to ask the question of who was the only Virginia high school runner to win the boys title in a Foot Locker/Kinney Nationals, many would be stumped to come up with the correct answer of 1981 Kinney Nationals champion Charles Alexander of St. Christopher's School in Richmond. In the third ever Kinney Nationals held in Orlando, Alexander would win by four seconds in 14:51 by outkicking Californian Harold Kuphaldt.MileStat.com's Brandon Miles was able to catch up with the 1981 national champion while out in San Diego this week for the 29th annual event. Yes, it has been 26 years since Virginia had an individual boys champion. 

It was a great year for Florida girls!  Four Floridians qualified for this year's prestigious Foot Locker Nationals race in San Diego:  Kayla Hale, Emilie Amaro, Brittany Koziara, and Ashley Brasovan.  This is the most historic and significant cross country race for a high school individual and an experience that will no doubt forever be a highlight in these ladies' lives. There are two past Foot Locker Nationals champions in the field coming off strong regional wins in 2005 champ Jordan Hasay from California and 2006 champ Kathy Kroeger from Tennessee. History will be working against both though for a second national title. Hasay would become the first runner to win a second title with a year of separation between two wins. Meanwhile, Kroeger will be attempting to break the curse of the four previous underclassmen national champions before her who failed to repeat the following year and gave way to a new champion. Best bets to become the new champion appear to be are Midwest Region winner Claire Durkin of Ohio (pictured above), Northeast Region winner Neely Spence of Pennsylvania, and last year's national runner-up Aurora Scott of Virginia.

  Brandon Miles of MileSplit US is confident to predict for this weekend's Foot Locker Nationals that the weather will play a role in how runners from different geographic regions of the country will fair at Balboa Park with rain (80% chance on Friday, 40% chance on Saturday) and cooler temperatures expected for this weekend.By breaking 15 minutes in his Midwest Regional victory in Kenosha, Mike Fout joined pretty good company to make him the slight individual favorite according to Miles. A group of runners who more than often end up as Foot Locker Nationals champions, which has been the case in recent years with the likes of Dathan Ritzenhein, Chris Solinsky, and Matthew Witherow. Solinsky and Witherow would have enjoyed being able to run in Saturday's forecasted weather than the typically warm Southern Cal that they ran through onto theirnational titles.

 MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage of the Foot Locker Nationals in not so sunny San Diego (rain forecasted for Friday into Saturday) with Brandon Miles and photographer John Herzog. This week will have the largest number of finalists from Virginia at the Foot Locker Nationals in a decade as the 1997 FLN had four girls and two boys from Virginia. At least one in the group including Jason Witt of Midlothian, Griff Graves of Abingdon, Thomas Porter of Mountain View, and Michael Hammond of Midlothian will be looking to break a four year drought of no Virginian boys earning All-American honors with a top 15 finish at Foot Locker Nationals (Kippy Keino, Fork Union, 2002, 15th). While two boys in Griff Graves and Thomas Porter will have experience from last year as returning finalists, Aurora Scott will be making her fourth trip to San Diego as she looks to continue her progression of improved places in each of her races at Balboa Park. A national runner-up last year, Scott is not in the favorite role as she found herself in last year after a course record breaking performance at the regional meet in 2006. Winning is a goal for Scott, but a victory would be an upset to others. Kathleen Lautzenheiser is part of the trio of Midlothian finalists who will be in San Diego as they were all guided by long-time Midlo coach Stan Morgan. Coach Morgan has coached for decades until having his first individual qualify for Foot Locker Nationals this year and ended up having not just one, but three finish in the top 10 at the South Regional.We arrive in San Diego on Thursday and will be bringing you plenty of coverage through Sunday with photos, videos, interviews, stories, and more. The pack during the first mile of the FL West boys race The strength of the West once again lies in how well their pack runs.  Both the boys and girls squads have front runners with a chance to win the individual title.  German Fernandez and Jorday Hasay enters as pre-race favorites, while Luke Puskedra is also a pre-race favorite on the boys side.  The boys side however has no athletes competing with past Foot Locker Nationals experience.

Kathy Kroeger (TN) leads the Girls Seeded race at FL SouthThe strength of the South region this season lies in it's depth.  The South girls have at least six athletes who have a shot to finish in the top eight, led by five Foot Locker returnees.  The South boys return numerous individuals from last year's squad and are looking to harness that experience for a big performance this year. 

 FLNE Girls race winner Neely Spence (PA)The best of the best in Northeast came together at Van Cortland Park two weeks ago at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional.  The top ten boys and the top ten girls each qualified for Foot Locker Nationals this coming weekend in San Diego.  See who qualified and what they have accomplished.

On Sunday at the Seton Hall Games, Easton senior Chanelle Price posted the #12 all-time 500 meter dash, going 1:13.22. All DVGTCA and TFCAGP results posted. At the DVGTCA Meet #2 @ Lehigh, Karen Shump went two-and-O for the season with a 4-foot+ winning shot. Chester and Council Rock O'Hara battled in a close DMR. Rhian Jones, Haverford, and Alix Williams, Strath Haven, busted a minute in the 400. Also at Lehigh, in the TFCAGP Division I, Central Bucks East senior Josh Izewski eclipsed 8:55 in the 3000. Adam Haun, Council Rock South neared 22' in the long jump. Derek Hynes, Central Bucks South, cleared 14' in the pole vault. Joining him with the early state lead in that event was Phoenixville's Tony Shirk, who did it at the TFCAGP Division II meet. Holy Ghost Prep cracked 11 minutes in their DMR win. With one more Foot Locker Regional to go, the MileSplit Foot Locker National Power Rankings begin to shape up into a meet preview more than anything.  With three Foot Locker Regionals taking place this past weekend a lot of movement occurred in this weeks rankings.  Donn Cabral (above) made the largest leap of the week to U.S. #4.

This is the big weekend for athletes and teams from Pennsylvania hoping to advance to Foot Locker Nationals December 8th in San Diego, and to Nike Team Nationals on December 1st in Portland, Oregon. There are two returning Foot Locker finalists, and a few girls who have been close, and this year have a great chance of advancing. And in the first year of the regional race for Nike Team Nationals, the top two PA boys teams and top-ranked girls team are aiming for the 4th NTN. As always, our previews are merely a guide, and NOT predictions. Our sister site ArmoryTrack.com of the MileSplit Network will be providing complete coverage of the NTN regional at Wappinger Falls, NY, while the PennTrackXC.com team will cover the Foot Locker regional at Van Cortlandt Park in da Bronx.

We are focusing on the top PA talent in cross country, as they continue their trek to qualify for the Footlocker National Championships in San Diego, CA. They have one shot to make it...

U.S. #2 Luke Puskedra leads the way at NTN Southwest(Photo by Gary Murray)One week to go until three of the four Foot Locker Regionals take place.  With such important meets ahead, many of the top runners in the land ran one more race before the big weekend.  Two new athletes join the ranks this week.  Mike Fout of Indiana jumps to #10 on the boys side, while Nastia Bishton of Arizona joins her sister Nadya at #12 on the girls side.

With three of the four Foot Locker regionals taking place next weekend, many of the top individuals around the country used a post-season meet to tune-up for the competition and a few more had their last state series competition.  Next week sixty of the eighty Foot Locker Nationals competitors will be named.  It's finally time!

   A fine week of performances keep the MileSplit Foot Locker National Power Rankings interesting.  A few loses by ranked athletes helps new athletes jump into the fray as the Foot Locker regional competitions draw near.

Many of the top individuals took the weekend off after strong performances at their respective state meets the week before.  However a few of the top runners did compete and finished with amazing results.  Boys US #1 Chris Derrick won the NTN Midwest Regional by nearly twenty seconds, while girls US #1 Jordan Hasay won by over 90 seconds at her Sectional race.

With state meet concluding, and the season starting to point towards post-season races, the MileSplit Foot Locker National Power Rankings expanded to twelve athletes a piece this week.  Newcomers to the list include: Griff Graves (VA), Brian Leung (NJ), Claire Durkin (OH) and Nadya Bishton (AZ).

With over half a dozen of the top boys and girls participating in their respective state competitions, a lot of fine performances highlighted the weekend.  The top state performances came from Chris Derrick (IL) and Carly Seymour (PA).  Derrick won the Illinois State Meet with the second fastest mark ever on the course, and the fastest time in thirty years.  Seymour dominated the Pennsylvania State Meet, running the fastest time of the day by 25 seconds in 17:49.

With 15 of the MileSplit Foot Locker National Power Ranking athletes competing this past weekend, and with all of them winning, few changes took place in this week's rankings.  However, a few performances really stood out, thus raising an athletes ranking.

With most of the top teams winning this weekend, little movement occurred on the Oct. 30 installement of the MileSplit National Team Power Rankings.  However, US #10 Wheaton North boys and US #8 Fort Collins girls both lost, with Murrieta Valley (CA) and Dakota Ridge (CO) taking their spots in this week's rankings.

The majority of ranked individuals competed this weekend, as conference and state-series races took place in full force.  Kevin Williams won the Colorado State title, while Georgia Griffin (New Hampshire) and Katie Flood (Iowa) won their respsective state titles as well.

With dozens of state meets happening over the next two weeks, upsets are bound to occur.  This week, little change took place in the rankings, however new #1 rankings for both boys and girls took place in the MileSplit US National Foot Locker Power Rankings.  Luke Puskedra (UT) and Jordan Hasay (CA) took over the top spots after their stellar performances.

As the state series meets fall upon us, many of the top harriers in the land ran easy this past weekend, if at all.  The one state champion crowned, US #2 Luke Puskedra, ran away to a meet record at the Utah State Cross Country Championships.  While Puskedra kicked it to another gear, many others did as well.

While few top individuals lost this past weekend, a few did, thus lifting a few fresh faces into the MileSplit Foot Locker Power Rankings - National.  Three new faces grace the rankings this week in: Rob Finnerty (Sr., Burnsville, MN), Georgia Griffin (Sr., Hanover, NH) and Kathy Kroeger (Jr., Independence, TN).  Also, a new girls US #1 is crowned. 

   With many of the top individuals not competing this past weekend, or running in smaller invitationals, few changes occurred on this week's top ten lists.  However, one newcomer jumps onto the list.  Peter Dorrell (Sr., Blacksburg, VA) moves to #10 on the boys side.

A weekend of top notch action concludes, and the new MileSplit Foot Locker Power Rankings - National (Oct. 2) are now ready.  Many of the top ten originals still roam the list, but a few fresh faces enter the mix.  The biggest jump on the list is Katie Flood (So., Dowling Catholic, IA), moving from un-ranked to fourth in the country after a huge win over Emily Sisson at the Roy Griak Invitational.  Meanwhile, Doug Smith (Jr., Gill-Bernard's, NJ) and Kevin Williams (Sr., D'Evelyn, CO) both enter the boys rankings. 

Each week, from now until Foot Locker Nationals, MileSplit.us presents the top ten ranked boys and girls in the nation.  Highlights and results on each of the top ten ranked boys and girls come out on Mondays, while new top ten rankings are released on Tuesday.  Regional rankings come out every other week. 

While most of the nation competed over the past few weeks, the Northeast starts a little slower.  With only one or two meets under each athletes belt, the Northeast rankings did not jump around as much this week.  The Pennsylvania girls, Neely Spence and Carly Seymour, are still 1-2, while Brandon Jarrett continues to lead the way on the boys side. 

Unlike most other regions, matchups between Foot Locker contenders in the South Region come about frequently.  In the first two weeks, nearly all the boys on the MileSplit FL Power Rankings top twelve met another contender, while half the girls seemed to as well.  With a couple of very close races, the rankings jumped around a bit, although few newcomers arrived on this weeks' rankings.

  The cross country courses out west are really starting to heat up!  Newly minted 1-2 ranked boys, German Fernandez and Luke Puskerda, opened their seasons with blazing course records, while on the girl's side Christine Babcock broke her own meet record this past weekend impressively.  The West looks great, but there is a long way to go.

A traditional power at Foot Locker Nationals, the Midwest Region's performances this year, thus far, are as good as they have ever been.  While few emerging newcomers earn their way onto this week's MileSplit Foot Locker Power Rankings, some heralded veterans show why they are on this list in the first place. 

 Always tough, the Northeast girls should perform well at Foot Locker once again.  With half the team from last year returning, and a pack of much improved runners from around the region, the Northeast should rise to the challenge once again in San Diego. 

Last December, the Midwest girls won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships team title.  They completed the task with amazing precision, placing their top five scorers in the top twelve spots.  This year, the Midwest girls are looking just as strong, as four returnees will be duking it on for a team spot again, and a slew of young talent tires to break through.   Two girls from Ohio are ranked in the top twelve and two more Ohio girls are mentioned to keep an eye on.

 The Midwest boys look strong this year, despite their last place finish at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships last fall.  Led by a quartet of seniors, who have run nine-flat or under for two miles, and a couple of juniors who have Foot Locker Nationals experience, the Midwest is ready to show their strength in cross country once again.

With many of the top runners in the region graduating, the Northeast boys field is wide open.  A few experienced seniors lead the charge, such as: Sintayehu Taye, Brandon Jarrett and Donn Cabral.  After those three, there are no less than a dozen others that could finish as high up as fourth at Foot Locker Regionals in November.  It's a new year in the Northeast, so let the fun begin!

The South will not only be strong on the boys side this year, but on the girls side, on paper, they look to be the strongest region up top.  Foot Locker defending champion Kathy Kroeger is back and running strong, while runner-up Aurora Scott has one last year to earn a national championship.  With those two leading the way, the South will be very tough to beat, especially since they return six of their top ten from 2006.

The Midwest boys look strong this year, despite their last place finish at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships last fall.  Led by a quartet of seniors, who have run nine-flat or under for two miles, and a couple of juniors who have Foot Locker Nationals experience, the Midwest is ready to show their strength in cross country once again.

Last December, the Midwest girls won the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships team title.  They completed the task with amazing precision, placing their top five scorers in the top twelve spots.  This year, the Midwest girls are looking just as strong, as four returnees will be duking it on for a team spot again, and a slew of young talent tires to break through.

Youth is served as the South boys line it up again for another fall.  Last year, the South Region had six boys that were non-seniors, the most out of any region.  With those six all returning (no transfers), and a lot of other distancemen stepping it up during the spring, this year's Foot Locker South Regional should be might competitive.

With nearly half of the Foot Locker West National Team returning from '06, the expectations are high in '07.  Jordan Hasay is the number one ranked harrier of course, after her however, the rankings get a little more complex.  Every year the West seems to have a lot of young ladies who put up some very impressive numbers, and this year should be no different.

The West boys were dominated by senior talent last fall at Foot Locker Regionals.  With 17 of the top 19 regional racers now graduated, a new era can rise up and take hold of the dominant West reign.  With a nice mix of talent, from a variety of states, this year's West squad could be the most diverse in some time.

Nothing is more prestigious for a distance runner than qualifying for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.  The best of the best have annually competed in this event, making it the showcase of post-season competition.  This year, MileSplit.us will be ranking the top individuals in each region!
