Our Fun with the Database Rankings series continues with a breakdown of teams by 1-5 splits for 5000 meters and for 3 miles.
We went 50 teams deep for boys and girls at both distances. Rankings are based on 2019 season bests and are dependent on teams having at least five runners with times in the database at the filtered distance. While we reference CIF division breakdowns in the text, all rankings are based on the entire state regardless of division. The 1-5 split time is highlighted at the end of the line under each team's top five.
The top-50 ranges:
And would you believe that the Great Oak Wolfpack does not lead in any of the four 1-5 pack rankings? It's true! As strong as GO is, its 'Pack doesn't quite reach the top here.
OK, we're having a little fun with the program's mascot nickname, not to mention a core value ... so they're second in both boys 5K and 3M, fourth in girls 5K and sixth in girls 3M! Great Oak is the only program to rank among the top 10 in all four categories. No other program made the top 10 more than once!
What about the boys from Newbury Park?
Welp, when you have the fastest runner in the country, the 1-5 split tends to spread out just a bit.
Yeah, Nico Young, especially, and Jace Aschbrenner, make it difficult for the Panthers to be a player in 1-5 split rankings. NP ranks 88th for 3 miles (57.00) and 92nd for 5K (1:08.10). For 3 miles, NP's split between Young and No. 3 Nick Goldstein is 45.90 while its 3-5 split is 11.10
That 5K split is the difference between Young and his freshman brother Lex, NP's No. 5.
At 5K -- the State Meet distance -- Aschbrenner is 19.5 behind No. 3 Colin Sahlman and the 3-5 split between Sahlman and Lex Young is 14.00.

Ranking 1-5 splits is a feature of the MileSplit database available to subscribers by simply clicking on Rankings, then XC Team Scores and adjusting the 'Rank By' dropdown to 'Split.' You may filter by gender, season, scoring, year, event, scorers per team (3, 4 or 5) and also filter by league, division, and section.
