David Rooney sets school record in the 5,000 meters Breaks his own mark in California meet

 

A school record run and victory in the 5000 meters by David Rooney highlighted McNeese State track and field efforts late Friday night and Saturday.

Rooney ran in the Mt. SAC Relays in California late Saturday and won the 5000 meter open event with a school record clocking of 13:53.04.  He broke his own record by 14 seconds.  He won over Missouri's Dan Quigley by two seconds.

Also in late races in California, Fionnuala Ross finished fourth in the women's 10,000 meters with a career best 35:18.06 which is also the second fastest in McNeese history.

And, in the men's 5000 meters, Alex Bruce-Littlewood ran 14:24.55 for a 14th place showing.

In Baton Rouge in the LSU Classic track and field meet, the Cowgirls got a first place from Desarae Couthren in the women's 400 hurdles, a second by Ashlee Smith in the discus and a fourth from Ashleigh Wells in the 400 meters while the Cowboys best was a fourth by Thomas Canchola in the shot put and a sixth by Ben Chretien in the javelin.

Courthren ran 1:01.30 in winning the 400 hurdles. It's the second fastest by a Cowgirls.

Smith went 161-2 in the discus while Wells ran a 56.1 in the 400 meters and also placed 15th in the 200 meters at 26.63.

Canchola tossed the shot 54-2 and Chretien had a 216-7 toss in the javelin.

Also for the Cowgirls, Mariah Georgetown ran eighth in the 100 hurdles at 14.03, Courtnei Carter finished 10th in the long jump at 18-2.5, Meraiah Young was 13th in the javelin at 122-1 and Alyssa Cotton cleared 11-3 for a ninth place in the pole vault.

Torian Lindsey ran 49.09 for 11th place in the men's 400 meters, Tevon Remo was 10th in the long jump at 21-10, Lance Ardoin 10th in the pole vault at 15-3, Jared Crafton 11th in the shot pout at 50-4 and Josh Jordan made his season debut with a 189-10 effort in the javelin for 11th place.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team ran 3:52.92 for 11th place.

Next up for McNeese will be the Texas State Invitational on Saturday in San Marcos.
