California's next generation wasted no time making an impact.
From race victories and course records to key varsity contributions, these freshman boys and girls delivered standout debuts during the opening week of the 2026 CIF cross country season.
Freshman Girls Debuts
Abby Buckley (Buchanan) | Fleet Feet Summer Sizzle Varsity Girls 7th Place | 2 Mile - 11:22.16
We already mentioned Abby Buckley's amazing start to the season in our review of top incoming Californian freshmen, but we also want to note where her performance at Fleet Feet Summer Sizzle places her among the D1 CIF State XC Champions. Buckley finished as the 4th runner for Buchanan in a competitive race that will surely prepare her for the primetime races the Bears will run this season.
Sofia Wroblewski (Yorba Linda) | Mountie Xpress Freshmen Girls - Small School Winner | 2 Mile - 11:28.70
We won't belabor you with the details of Sofia Wroblewski's astonishing high school debut again, as covered in our Mountie Xpress Recap and Weekend Rewind. The main thing to remember is that she's dangerous, and we are excited to see her step up to a 3-mile course soon.
Brielle Boyce (Canyon - Anaheim Hills) | Mountie Xpress Freshmen Girls - Large School Winner | 2 Mile - 11:43.00
Brielle Boyce dominated the Freshmen Girls Large School race at the Mountie Xpress Invitational by more than a minute, winning her first-ever cross country race. She also finished as the 6th-fastest runner of the meet and the fastest girl from Canyon-Anaheim. Boyce's introduction gives Canyon a formidable duo with sophomore Robyn Langelier, who finished 9th overall at Mountie Xpress.
Ava Takeuchi (Whitney) | Sierra Invitational Freshman Girls Winner | 2 Mile - 12:13.06
In our top incoming Californian freshmen article, we highlighted Ava Takeuchi's versatility on the track, making her a must-watch athlete this season. Takeuchi's debut lived up to the hype by winning the Freshman Girls race at the Sierra Invitational, clocking the 8th-fastest time of the day. This strong start to the season puts the reigning D2 CIF State XC Champions, Whitney, in a strong position to make another run at the State meet.
Lauren Acosta (Woodbridge) | The Bridge XC Challenge Runner-Up | 3 Mile - 18:41.90
Lauren Acosta made an impressive debut for Woodbridge at the Bridge XC Challenge, finishing second in 18:41. This freshman has extensive experience as a club runner for OC Girt at the USATF Junior Olympics, making her a top freshman to watch this season.
Freshman Boys Debuts
Chase Davis (Clovis) | Fleet Feet Summer Sizzle 42nd Place | 2 Mile - 10:10.07
Chase Davis delivered a strong high school debut, finishing as the top freshman at the Fleet Feet Summer Sizzle. During Davis' middle school years, he was a top performer in the Clovis area, and he continued to improve, shaving 43 seconds off his two-mile time last season.
Andrew Nielsen (Yucaipa) | Mountie Xpress Winner Freshman Boys - Large School Winner | 2 Mile - 10:10.10
In our Mountie Xpress Invitational recap, we noted that Andrew Nielsen shattered the 2-mile course record, finishing in 10:10.10. His performance was the 6th-fastest overall on the day and helped lead Yucaipa to a runner-up team finish in the meet merge. Nielsen's addition will help a Yucaipa team with a lot of promise this season.
Andrew Carr (Fountain Valley) | Mountie Xpress Freshman Boys -Large School Runner-Up | 2 Mile - 10:15.90
Andrew Carr's high school debut was highlighted by a strong battle with Andrew Nielsen, pushing him to 10:15.90, which ranked 8th overall. Carr is carrying momentum from the USATF Junior Olympics 1500m and 3000m finals, demonstrating his potential at the high school level.
Jude York (Oaks Christian) | Rio Mesa HOKA Postal 7th Place | 2 Mile - 10:26.20
Jude York's 10:26.20 at the Rio Mesa HOKA Postal Invitational is a promising sign for an Oaks Christian team that lost many seniors last season. After seeing Sterling White's historic freshman season last year, even a sliver of that kind of season would make York a valuable piece for the Lions.
Antonio Benitez (Woodbridge) | The Bridge XC Challenge 7th Place | 3 Mile - 16:13.90
Antonio Benitez's 16:13 at the Bridge XC Challenge isn't earth-shattering, but it's a strong sign of Woodbridge's development and a step toward building a legacy for years to come. For now, Benitez will still be fighting for a spot on Woodbridge's top 7, but his presence will be valuable for a team with Nike Cross Nationals aspirations this season.
