Californians Representing Team USA at World Athletics U20s

Tomorrow, seven California high school athletes get their chance to represent Team USA and compete on the world stage for the first time. The World Athletics U20 Championships begin tomorrow, August 5-9, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Five of the California boys and girls representing Team USA won CIF State Championships this past school year.

• CIF State Girls 400m & 200m Champion - Clara Adams 
• CIF State Girls 3200m Champion - Chiara Dailey 
• CIF State Girls Shot Put & Discus Champion - Jaslene Massey
• CIF State Boys 200m Champion - Cy Lugo
• CIF State Boys 4x400m Champion - Jaelen Hunter

Jaslene Massey stole the show in California this season by completing an undefeated shot put and discus season. She ranks U.S. #2 all-time in the discus, and U.S. #4 all-time in the shot put. Massey will compete at her future home of Hayward Field as a University of Oregon commit.

Clara Adams and Chiara Dailey are also key CIF State Champions to watch this week. Adams ran a 400m personal record of 51.61 to qualify for World U20s, which is the fourth-fastest in California history. After the CIF State Championships, Dailey gained more confidence at the Brooks PR Invitational, where she broke the California 2 Mile record with a 9:49.57 to capture her victory. 

Another key Californian to watch is Grace Wagener, who just completed her freshman year running cross country and track at Laguna Beach High School. She is the only girl from Team USA competing in the 5000m race walk and already holds a lot of high-level experience. Wagener is a three-time USATF National Junior Olympic 3000m race walk champion and dominated this year's Penn Relays 5000m race walk, setting a PR of 24:53.95.
