California's next wave of talent continues to impress as freshmen and sophomores deliver standout performances across multiple events. From breakout races to major personal bests, these athletes are quickly establishing themselves as names to watch heading into the postseason.
Last week, Khloe McCoy earned two personal records in the 200m and 400m, moving her up to CA #3 in both events. At the Hart vs Golden Valley/Canyon dual meet, she first ran 56.05, improving from her personal best of 56.43 from the Mt. Carmel Sundevil Invite. McCoy came back to run 24.81 in the 200m to show off her speed and break 25 seconds for the first time. At Arcadia, she'll run the Open 400m dash and be a key member on Canyon's 4x400m in the invitational heat.
Sidney Johonson was once a fantastic freshman and is now a super sophomore who swept the throws victories at the Stanford Invitational. Johnson threw 144-7.75 in the discus and a new personal record of 44-11.75 in the shot put. Almost crossing over to 45-feet is a big breakthrough since she managed to throw only 42-11 last season to earn fifth place at the CIF State Final. Last week's performance will surely give her a lot of momentum before she competes in the discus and shot put at the Arcadia Invite on Saturday.
At the Stanford Invitational, Azra Gercek narrowly finished runner-up in the 800m, setting a new personal record of 2:10.93 and improving on her previous best of 2:11, set last month at the Hi-Racer Meet of Champions. This is a big improvement for Gercek, who qualified for the CIF State meet last year but couldn't reach the finals. A performance like this could push her into the CIF Finals this year and challenge for a podium spot. This weekend, she'll compete in the Open 800m heats at the Arcaida Invitational, where she may dip under that 2:10 barrier for the first time.
Zachary Taylor has been nothing short of amazing this season, and that continued this last week in the discus. He dominated the Trabuco Hills' dual meet against Aliso Niguel with a personal record of 161-10. That mark ranks him as the third-best sophomore in the state and gives him momentum to hopefully advance past the CIF Southern Section prelims round, unlike last year this May. He'll compete again this weekend in the Arcadia Open Shot Put on Saturday.
At the Stanford Invitational, Rohan Iyer ran 9:10.49 to improve by 14-seconds to finish runner-up in the fastest section. This breakthrough performance puts Iyer in a position to advance through the CIF rounds. Up next, he'll play a key role for Milpitas in the 4x1600m relay's seeded section in Arcadia this weekend.
